Unchained From the Power of Sin

UNCHAINED FROM THE POWER OF SIN LET US LIVE UNTO RIGHTEOUSNESS
Romans 6:6-7      45.72
Charles e. Whisnant April 17 2011

“KNOWING(1097) THIS, THAT OUR OLD(3820) MAN(444) IS CRUCIFIED(4957) WITH HIM, THAT THE BODY(4983), MIGHT BE DESTROYED(2673), THAT HENCEFORTH(3371) WE SHOULD NOT SERVE(1398) SIN(266).”  Romans 6:6
“FOR HE THAT IS DEAD IS FREED(144) FROM SIN.” Romans 6:7

KNOWING THIS(1097) GINOSKO

·       Means to acquire information by whatever means, but often implies  personal involvement or experience.  Ezekiel 11:19

OLD(3820) palaois
·       Means in this sense or conveys the sense of being obsolete, antiquated or outworn. Matthew 9:16; Mark 2:21; Luke 5:36 (same idea in all three verses)

MAN(444) ANTHROPOS   SELF
·       Paul is describing here the unsaved person who was dominated by the totally depraved nature that he received from Adam, and who is “under sin,” and is not “righteous”, and therefore “helpless” to save himself. He is therefore a sinner and thus an “enemy” of God.
·       We are to “lay aside” that crucified, dead, and corrupt old self (Ephesians 4:22-24), and “put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth”. Colossians 3:9-10

·       Christians sin because of the remnants of sinful flesh, not because they have the same old active sinful nature. Certainly we sin, but when we sin it is contrary to our nature, not because we have two dispositions—one sinful and one not.

CRUCIFIED WITH(4957)
·       The believer has entered into an intimate, spiritual union with Christ,  identification with Christ. Galatians 5:25
IN ORDER THAT (2443)
·       So what is the purpose and effect of this co-crucifixion of our “old self” with Christ?

THE BODY(4983) OF SIN(266)
·       Our body, with all its arms, legs, feet, eyes, etc. We are all born as a sinner, and as a result we are ruled by SIN.

SIN  (hamartia) Romans 5:12
·       A principle or force personified as a moral evil character.\

THE BODY OF SIN
·       Our body, physical body, is the vehicle in which SIN expresses itself and causes our body to “miss the mark” of God’s standard: James 2:10
·       John Murray said:  “the body as conditioned and controlled by sin.”

THE SIN: speaking as an organized power, acting on our mind, thoughts, ideas, etc.
·       We are to understand “might” does not mean “maybe”. As if there would be a possibility of doubt as if the body of sin might not be destroyed. Hebrews 2:14
·       The idea is not “to annihilate” to destroy utterly and completely and therefore cause to cease to exist. But the idea is that of depriving SIN power to be used for which it was intended to be used.
·       The point Paul is making is not that Christians don’t sin, but instead, the domination, and rule of sin have been defeated for them.

THAT HENCEFORTH WE SHOULD NOT SERVE(1398) SIN
·       NO LONGER SLAVES! 2 Peter 2:19

NOT SERVE(1398) (DOULEUO) SIN
·       A slave does what the master (SIN) tells him to do.  Believers in Christ are no longer slaves of SIN

Sin is suicidal action of the human will.

FOR
·       Paul is going to give an explanation of how believers have been freed from their former dictator SIN>

HE THAT IS DEAD(599)
·       Has died. Paul is saying the believer who is justified by faith in Jesus Christ has actually “died off” to the power of Sin and is no longer in bondage to this cruel taskmaster.
·       We could translate it “We died once for all.”

IS FREED(1344) FROM SIN
to declare, pronounce one to be just, righteous, o
