The True Upright Person from Proverbs 14:2

Proverbs 14:2  He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.
Charles e Whisnant,  06 14 2015

vs. 2a  THE RIGHT LIVING MAN SHOWS HIS REVERENCE FOR THE LORD
UPRIGHTNESS: THE FRUIT OF FEARING GOD.

Right: Exodus 15:26  "to be straight"  Jeremiah 31:9 ; First Kings 15:3

Samuel promise himself to instruct God's people in "the good and in the right way" First Samuel 12:23.

Nehemiah thanked God for having given just ordinances: Nehemiah 9:13

God expects us to be pleasing to Him and being obedience to Him: Deuteronomy 6:18

When yashar pertains to people, its best translated "just" or "upright."

His word Psalms 33:4  His Judgment: Psalms 19:9; and ways: Hosea 14:9; reveal His uprightness and are a blessing to His people.

The believer, who then follows Him is being "upright" in heart: Psalms 32:11, 7:10 and 11:2
In their daily conduct they manifest that they are walking on the narrow road: Psalms 37:14

"It is a quality of heart and mind: Psalms 7:11; 11:2. which enables the upright man to keep loyally to any legally binding agreement. Second Kings 10:15.

The moral quality of the heart: Deut. 9:3; First Kings 9:4 as often in Proverbs 2:13 and 4:11. Which results in "right paths' i.e. right both morally and practically: Job 33:23.

A characteristic of David's Life in First Kings 3:6  and Job's in Job 6:25 and Eccl 12:10
"To do what is right", in the eyes of the LORD, is linked with obedience to His commands: Exodus 15:26; Deut 6:17-18;

Note the evaluation of the Kings of Israel and Judah.

The proof of our fear (reverence) of God will be seen in our conduct and will be the desires of our heart in the inner man.

MEN REVEAL THEIR HEARTS TOWARD GOD IN THEIR DAILY WALK
Upright in conduct and in his heart.

It's living with an awe of God, in personal devotion to Him, it is not just active zeal.
The proof that we really are saved is seen in our walk: Matthew 7:16-20, First John 1:6-7.

Our walk needs to measure up to our talk:  James 2:14-18

It's one thing to say we're saved yet quite another to reveal a true conversion by the christian walk. Second Corinthians 5:17.

What does it man to fear the Lord?  Proverbs 8:13

He that walks in his uprightness fears the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despises him.

Used figuratively of crooked and devious ways.  2:8 and 14:2
Isaiah 30:12 denounces those who rather than trusting in the word of God, trust in oppressive and devious practices o their own scheming. In so doing, however, they suffer the judgment of God.
"To turn aside, or depart from"  Second Timothy 3:7-10 and Titus 1:16

Proverbs 14 and 31 Woman Study Notes

 THE MEASURE OF A WOMAN:
NOTES FROM Charles e. Whisnant
First Baptist Church, Altoona, Kansas 1992
Rivers of Joy Baptist Church in 2010

1A  God's Perspective on Beauty: Prov. 31:10

How do you measure a woman? Her worth, her true beauty, her total being? Historically, it's obvious that the criteria have often been very specific and restrictive. And today's society highlights this narrow point of view by many means. Simply stated, it is physical appearance. Movies, magazines, television, all bear constant witness to this external obsession.

God's perspective on women, however, is far more comprehensive. Its obvious that God is not opposed to beauty — not even in the sensual sense. In a unique and incomparable way, He created "woman for man " I Corin. 11:9. And any normal man bears witness to this reality. He responds to what he sees. After God made Eve he did say "very Good" Gen. 1:31. God did see the physical beauty, after all they were both naked and were not ashamed: Gen 2:25.
But the most significant qualities were internal. This is pointed out clearly in the rest of scripture.

But, God's intended perspective on women has been marred. Sin, entered in the world, caused man to focus on external beauty and to abuse it, pervert it and use it for all kinds of selfish purposes.

But God's perspective goes on nevertheless! And men and woman who seek to do God's will can discover what that perspective is. It neither eliminates physical beauty, nor excludes inner qualities. God's perspective certainly includes both, but puts the emphasis where it ought to be--on what is real, living, lasting, and ultimately satisfying—and all within His moral laws.

God put's a high premium on Christian maturity. A dynamic profile for Christian maturity, for both men and women.

Both Paul and Peter say some things specified for women. Uniquely directed at women. These virtues in turn serve as criteria for measuring Christian maturity and true and lasting beauty.
TITUS 2:3-5
I TIMOTHY 3:11
I PETER 3:1-4
HERE IS A BRIEF LIST OF THOSE QUALITIES FOUND IN THESE PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURES

IB To Be WORTHY of Respect I Timothy 3:11
"Women in like manner serious, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things." (CBL/Greek) WOMAN (gunaikas) (wives of deacons) Some say those who hold a position of leadership in the assembly.  "Deaconesses" some use. GRAVE: (KJV) is in the Gr. semnas, meaning serious (4441 E/G CBL)says "WORTHY OF RESPECT. DIGNIFIED, HOLY, HONORABLE"  Its the goal of all Christians to have in their lives.

The idea is that we could teach carefully and in a dignified way. Its the concept of this: We must make sure we have carefully researched what we teach; our interpretations and applications should be accurate, and we should teach with confidence blended with humility and sincerity.

"A respectful" life style" particularly to those who are going to teach younger women.
A reverent, and dignified life-style (whether pastor, or teacher or even a general Christian) will form a backdrop against which the opponents of Christianity "may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us" Titus 2:8.

There is a sense in this word (semnos) that is significant in developing the quality of respect and dignity in our lives. It has to do with what we think about—the world of "ideas" and "things". Phil.4:8 Paul gives the idea. Paul deals with the conduct as well as the character. They must model good and godliness. I Tim. 3:14f. ("I am writing you these instructions so that______________________________ people in God's household might know how to conduct their lives." (CBL/GE)

What does our mind dwell on................................ What do women/man think on...............................
And what do they think about and do that could cause her to lose self-respect and consequently the respect of others?

Literature, TV shows, movies—anything that stimulates carnal appetites and that focuses on non-Christian behavior will eventually affect our self-respect.

Proverbs 14:1

Many modern-day novels, magazine articles, soap operas cater to the flesh and focus on lying, cheating, illegitimate sex, backbiting, gossiping, foul language, etc.
Any Christian woman who takes seriously God's standards for living, yet allows her mind to "think on these things" will sooner or later lose self-respect and be in danger of losing the respect of her husband, her children, and her close friends.
[NOTE GETZ'S BOOK, PAGE 20-24, a personal project which is designed to women develop self-respect as well as respect from others.]
(I will insert those pages in this material, also good for counseling)
There are several other qualities given:

2A  BE NOT MALICIOUS TALKERS: i.e. slanderers (1222 CBL) false accuser, (diabolous)

Gossip, out of control, can turn to slander. 3A  TO BE TEMPERATE (SOBER) gr. nephaleous, (3386) drinking no wine, temperate

clearheaded.   A lack of self control and temperance is a mark of spiritual immaturity.      [moderation in action, thought, feeling]

With all the sophistication in our culture, you would think that emotional and psychological stress would be diminished in this culture. But not so. There seems to be more frustrated women today as ever before, Why?

Increased pressures, new demands, unbelievable "performance standards" in our American culture. With the increase of frustration, there have become more "escape routes."  It used to be alcohol, still is, but now also drugs. (Both acceptable and unacceptable kinds). There is tobacco that is packaged in various shapes and sizes.

There is exotic food,
Beautiful clothing styles that change every season,
Clubs, you wouldn't believe, from PTO to Golf.
Where as many Christian women who would never take a drop of alcohol or a drug, However they "over-eat" with every degree of regularity.
There must be temperance applied to many things in life, including "eating food", spending money on herself, her family, on her home.

A woman must be temperate in all the means she uses to ease her frustration and stress and to satisfy her basic needs and desires.
The bible teaches temperance and self-control in all things: I Corin. 10: 23^ to 11:1. .   Held or kept within limits.

Proverbs Teaching

When I started the study of Proverbs in 1980, I continued the study off and on until 1994.
First Baptist Church, Altoona, Kansas

The study notes in those days were hand written. I arrived and finished chapter 14. There were 590 pages.

I began to make notes of the lessons.
I had a IBM typewriter, boy was it a good one.
*
By 1994 I began Proverbs 14. 20.111 was the number of lessons
.
By 1994 I finished Proverbs at 20.123

So from 1980 through August 1994 I had done 123 lessons in the first 14 chapters.

Coming to Rivers of Joy I began teaching the same notes. Well I have added a lot of notes.

Plus I am also using Bill Rinehart wonder study of Proverbs.
After 2 years I have arrived at chapter 14.
There are only a few on Video, none on cassette tape.

TO HAVE WISDOM IS?

Proverbs 10:1-2
INTRODUCTION REMARKS
Study Notes from November 01 2009
In Bible Study: Rivers of Joy Baptist Church

When the Hebrews heard the term “WISDOM” what did think? When Solomon wrote Proverbs and he used the general term ‘wisdom’ what was the idea that the Hebrew people received?
  • They understood the meaning to be one whose pattern of life, and lifestyle was in line with Biblical principles, and teaching of scriptures.
  • It seems today wisdom has the meaning of knowledge. Thus we need to get all this stuff of education down.

But wisdom is:

  • The ability to understand who God really is, and what it is that God want you to do, and you are doing it.

As I have said before:

  • Until you understand the intent of the Word of God, you can’t live it out in your life.
  • The purpose I have in mind when I am teaching, is to give you the sense of Scripture: is found in the example of these verses:
  • Ezra 7:10 : Ezra arrived in Jerusalem: prepared his heart, mind, soul: to seek the law of God and to do it, and to teach in Israel the statues and judgments of God.
  • Nehemiah 8:1-6: Ezra brought the law of God before the congregration:

To all those who could understand.

He read the law first.

He prayed unto the Lord.

Read it DISTINCTLY.

And gave the SENSE

And CAUSED them to understanding the reading.
·

  • Nehemiah 8:13 To understand the WORDS of the Law. They found what they were to do.
    ·
  • Understand: “To turn the mind to:” Deut 32:29, Psalms 41:2, 64:10, Proverbs 16:20, Daniel 9:13

WISDOM: is in its last analysis is PERSOAL HOLINESS.

FOOLISHINESS is in its last analysis: is PRACTICAL UNHOLINESS

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE WISE?

What does it take to be wise? Watching Dr. Phil, reading Brittney Spears mother's book on parenting, or looking into the yellowbook.com, or is there another way?

In a television commercial for online yellow pages, actor David Carradine plays a guru to a young seeker. (Sorry a side note: Kung Fu 1972, or Kill Bill 2004) When the student asks, "How do I find enlightenment?" the master says, "Yellowbook.com .. . Everyone is searching for something . . . After all, it is a material world, and with yellowbook.com, you just type in what and where."

The ad is insightful. Wisdom does involve the practical use of knowledge to get what we are looking for. The commercial is also right in suggesting that wisdom is more accessible than many of us might have thought.
-
The culture will always be looking for material wisdom to gain more money. Fox News has a network on how to gain knowledge of how to make more money. The world wants knowledge of how to gain the upper hand on Wall Street.
-
The Christians should seek knowlege on the Christian life, how to become like Christ.
Proverbs.com is a good place to start. When I was pastor of First Baptist Church in Altoona Kansas, Proverbs was the book I loved to teach the most. I have three three-ring binders of notes from that study. A lot of the material came from my friend Bill Rinehart who I had known from Wooster, Ohio. He had done a complete study of Proverbs and had a great set of notes.
-
Early in my childhood, mom and dad would read daily with Don and me from the book of Proverbs. We had a dose of Proverbs for years as a youth. There is no better book that you could buy that would do what the book of Proverbs would do.
-
Proverbs has thirty one chapters, reading a chapter a day would keep most Dr.'s away. We seek wisdom for living life by seeking to know God's blueprint for living. Dr. Phil might have some good advice for the secular world, and he does have a desire to help others. But Dr. Phil is not the first resource that we should turn to for handing life's situtation. Notice that those on the program already have the prob;ems. Britney Spears' mother who wrote a book on parenting could have used Proverbs. com. as the main source of instruction for mom's and dad's. But she was too much into making her child desire to have money and a life style like the culture.
-
We will look into this book of Proverbs this year and see the wisdom that is taught. Stay tuned.
