John 1:14 & Selected Scriptures
To start, we need to know that light is a significant
metaphor in Scripture and the word “light” occurs on the very first and very
last pages of Scripture, and more than 250 times in between.
In order to enter into the way that biblical authors use
light as a metaphor, we are going to spend a good amount of time reading
passages of the Bible so that they can shape our imaginations.
I desire that we will see Genesis in a different LIGHT and we look at how Scripture uses LIGHT as a
metaphorical imaginations in Scripture.
First, God creates light as something of an antidote to darkness.
Light comes from
God. God does not create darkness.
1.
Psalms 89:15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk
in the light of your presence, LORD.
2.
Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good
evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for
sweet and sweet for bitter.
Second, light gives order to creation and makes life possible.
1.
Psalm 56:13 For you have delivered me from death and
my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.
2.
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light and create darkness, I
bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things.
3.
Proverbs 13:9 The light of the righteous shines
brightly, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out.
Third, we see in the Genesis account that it is God’s word, that it
is God’s very speech that ushers in light.
1.
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light
for my path.
2.
Daniel 2:22 He reveals deep and hidden things; he
knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.
3. Isaiah 10:17
4. 1 John 1:5
