Romans 6:2 DEATH TO SIN

DOES THE GOSPEL ALLOW MEN TO BE UNHOLY AND CONTINIUE TO ABIDE IN SIN?
SHOULD SAINTS SIN?  OR
HOW SHOULD SAINTS LIVE IN VIEW OF Romans 6:1-14?
HOW ARE SAINTS TO VIEW THE DEATH OF SIN AND ALIVE WITH CHRIST
JESUS CHRIST CAME TO DIE THAT WE MIGHT DIE TO SIN AND LIVE TO RIGHTEOUSNESS[i]
Charles e. Whisnant, March 27, 2011  #45.69
GOD FORBID3361. HOW SHALL WE, THAT ARE DEAD TO SIN, LIVE ANY LONGER THEREIN?

The transliteration of the Romans 6:2 is:
NOT   MAY IT BE  WHO  WE DIED TO THE  SIN  HOW  STILL  SHALL WE LIVE IN IT?[i]

INTRODU CTION

·       In every age there have been those who have criticized the doctrine of justification by faith on the grounds that it logically leads to sin.  “If all the believer’s sins have already been paid for, if he has already been credited with perfect righteousness, if his good works will not help save him—if all this is true,” ask the antagonist; “then why worry about sin?” :”why try to do good? Why strive to live a righteous life”
Romans 6 is going to give us that answer.

ANSWER:   PAUL is going to  SHOW how unreasonable the proposition of verse 1 really is, Paul answers the question with another, “How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”

Paul says to the question “Can we continue to sin that grace may abound?” Paul says:
  • LET IT NOT BE.
  • FAR BE IT FROM.
  • PERISH THE THOUGHT.
·       NO WAY.·       MAY IT NEVER BE.·       NO NO NO.·       YOU CAN NOT CONTINUE IN SIN.·        DOESN’T ALLOW YOU THAT.·       IT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

NOW WE WANT TO KNOW WHY NOT?

  • Barnhouse:  “Holiness starts where justification leaves off or finishes, and if holiness does not start we have the right to suspect that justification never started either..”  And he is right.
  • John Murray has said:  The question really needs to be answered.  I agree. Far too many people believe in a salvation experience that does not have to show righteousness or sanctification.  In our pop culture today preachers are watering down the means whereby God will bring people to a saving knowledge of Himself.
·       People who are genuinely saved and they see those who make a profession of faith live in a world of sin, see their life as a embarrassment or disgrace.  They want to believe they are saved, but they know in their minds that there has been no really change in their life.  Some want to believe they were saved, but at some point they have lost their salvation.  Others believe they have “backslide”.   In other words they are still saved but have just fallen from the grace of God for a while.

If I were to ask the average person in the pew in the average church today, HOW DID YOU BECOME A CHRISTIAN AND WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE THE RESULT WILL BE IN YOUR LIFE?  You ask the average person who says they are a “Christian” when they were saved, and what has been their progress since they became a “Christian” and you will most likely learn they have not made in progress.

So understanding this chapter and knowing what Paul is saying there is uttermost important.   Paul makes this statement:  ‘WE WHO DIED TO SIN, HOW SHALL WE LIVE IN IT.”

·       I am afraid that the average person in the pew would have little understanding of what it means to have died to sin.

Therefore Paul felt it was needed to deal with the subject set before us.
In my style of teaching, I am trying to go from verse to verse, and sometimes that takes awhile and sometimes it overlaps into the other verses.

THE OVER ALL POINT THAT PAUL  IS MAKING:
  • A person who has been born again, how can that person continue in sin, and Paul said it cannot be.
  • SO WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE DOCTRINE OF GRACE, WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THIS MATTER OF SIN.   We need to understand this matter of THE BELIEVER’S DEATH TO SIN[ii]  We tend to look at the SIN as an action rather than a fact.

  • Paul want to show that SIN has been dealt with and is no longer an issue in the believers life.

·       Paul has shown this doctrine of SALVATION in Romans 3:15-5:21 .  If we can understand this matter of salvation we shall understand that God through Jesus Christ as accomplished the victory over SIN.

Here is what Paul is hoping to established in this chapter:

  • DEATH AND LIFE CANNOT COEXISIT.  WE CANNOT BE DEAD AND LIVING with respect to the same thing at the same time.

SO LET US LOOK AT THIS ROMANS 6:2 word by word and see if we can have a better understanding

[i] READING FROM THE GREEK IN THE COMPLETE BIBLICAL LIBRARY

[ii] In Romans 6:2,7 and 11, it stated that believers have died to sin: ‘we who died to sin” vs 2; “he who has died is freed from sin” vs 7 and “you must consider yourselves dead to sin” v. 11.  These expressions means that believers, through their identification with Christ, are dead to the GUILT of sin..

They are viewed by God as if they themselves died in the death of Christ and suffered the full penalty of sin’s guilt.  Sin can no longer make any legal claim on them; thus, they are dead to it----free from its condemnation.

That a believer are not dead to the influence or power of sin in their lives is proved both by the Bible (Romans 7:14-25) and Christian experience.

As Robert Haldane points out the meaning  of the phrase
·       “dead to sin” is often extended to included “death to the power of sin, to which it has not the smallest reference. (so says Robert.) ????

·       It exclusively indicates the justification of believers, and their freedom from the guilt of sin, having no allusion to their sanctification, which however, as the Apostsle immediately proceeds to prove, necessarily follows.

Smeation, in commenting on this praise in Romans 6:2
·       we died to sin,” observes that  “It frequently occurs in the Pauline epistles in  different  forms, and uniformly alludes not to an inward deliverance from sin, but to the Christian’s objective relation, or to his personal standing before God in the vicarious work of Christ; it means that we are legally dead to sin in Christ.

Preaching Expositional (verse by verse) produces results in Spiritual Health

Hearing preaching each week should help you grow in your experience as a Believer. If you hear all application of the truth and do not hear the teaching of the truth I believe we fall short of knowing all the truth.

I want people to have an intellectual deep knowledge of theology. I believe the more you know about God the better equip you are in knowing how God want you to live for Him.

The goal of teaching the scripture verse by verse (called expositional or expository teaching) is to help people know God's mind that He wants us to know about Him.

My goal for teaching Romans and Philippians and Proverbs each week is to help us know Jesus Christ. To help us know how Christ wants us to be like Him.

I want to teach what the Scripture is teaching. I really do try to say what the Scripture is saying, rather than what I would say.

Too much of our actions are based on subjective feelings and experiences rather than Biblical truth/teaching. I personally believe the more truth we can learn from the Scripture the more our minds will reflect the truth of God's word rather than our feelings and experiences. When we can put our belief and faith on the Biblical truth we can act upon them better.

One of our church members this last Sunday said "You know for the first time I believe I understand it, and now I need to live it." I was speaking from Romans 6:1 and 2. What does it mean to be Dead To Sin? This is the kind of result you want in your preaching/teaching.

Simply telling people how to live by telling stories generally is not the best way to teach. Helping them understand the principles of God's Word works better.

The Gospel worthy of all acceptation, or, The duty of sinners to believe in ... By Andrew Fuller

‘The objects of faith’, it has been said, ‘are not bare axioms or propositions: the act of the believer does not terminate at an axiom, but at the thing; for axioms are not formed but that by them knowledge may be had of things.’

The Gospel worthy of all acceptation, or, The duty of sinners to believe in ...

 By Andrew Fuller
…the person, blood, and righteousness of Christ revealed in the Scriptures as the way of a sinner’s acceptance with God are, properly speaking, the objects of our faith; for without such a revelation it were impossible to believe in them.

The Enemies of the Cross

ARE YOU WEEPING
Charles e Whisnant,  March 13, 2011 Philippians 3:18

MY OCCUPATION AS A CHRISTIAN IS TO LIVE LIKE CHRIST WOULD IN A FALLEN WORLD

ARE YOU WEEPING OVER THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN TO THE VOICE OF THE ENEMIES OF CHRIST AND THE CROSS?

That is only something the Holy Spirit can do and He can only do that when a believer ‘s spirit is yielded to His working in his life.
If my focus is on Christ the Spirit will transform me into Christ’s image.

WHAT WILL HELP ME IN REACHNG THE GOAL OF THE PRIZE?
1A       FOLLOW AFTER GODLY EXAMPLES: VS. 17
2A       FLEE ENEMIES OF CHRIST AND THE CROSS: VS 18
18(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
Watch out that you don’t follow the enemies of Christ.  In the pursuit of sanctification, some are to be followed, many are to be avoided.

FOR MANY WALK

Because Paul knew firsthand that those who were walking among the saints at Philippi were teachers who did not follow after Christ. Their conduct, their behavior, their teaching, their doctrine was not in line with Christ.

OF WHOM I HAVE TOLD YOU OFTEN

“I have told you again and again.” Or “over and over.”  Matthew Henry said, “We so little heed the warning given us that we have need to have them repeated.”  Colossians 2:4.  A good teacher uses repetition to make sure the teaching “takes root.”  Acts 20:31-32.
WEEPING 2799

Weeping expresses one’s immediate and outward reaction to suffering, or grief.  The preachers of Paul’s day brought tears to Paul’s eyes and grief to his soul because they were bringing disgrace to the name of Christ and His kingdom. Paul was weeping over the way some professed Christians are living.

THAT THEY ARE ENEMIES2190

Enemies are those who had a deep seated animosity or hatred for Christ.   Many came across as friends of the Lord.
OF THE CROSS4716 OF CHRIST

Mark 8:34-35 The cross here refers to the idea of self-denial which a believer must be prepared to be willing to do, to follow Christ.

WHO ARE THE FALSE ENEMIES OF CHRIST

They are not the drunkards, the harlots, but those who say they are Christians. Those who in practice are living to please themselves. They have a standard which they have adopted for their own conduct that is pleasing to them.  They teach a gospel that is not of Christ.  They do not teach the Cross as the only sufficiency for salvation.
THE CHURCH TODAY LACKS DISCERNMENT:
The false teachers that Christians will follow today. What Christian people will believe is amazing. I am dumbfounded how many people follow after so many quacks in the church today. And they don’t even know it.

There is a lack in the Christian church today for precise teaching and precise thinking and as a result they are victimized by those who are wolves in sheep clothing.

·       Today’s church is like the religious leaders of Jesus day, who could tell the difference between superficial things like pleasant and stormy weather, but not between truth and error. (Mark 16:1-3)

·       In contrast, God calls all true believers to pursue perfect conformity to the absolute, holy standard of His Word.

·       Spiritual discernment is the skill of separating divine truth from error. 1 Thessalonians 5:21

·       As believers we are to evaluate everything we come in contact with to distinguish what is true and false, good or bad, or right and wrong.  Who is preaching the Cross of Christ, who is teaching sound doctrine?

·       Paul wanted the people to be spiritually discerned about false teachers.

·       Do you know the difference between the teaching of John MacArthur and Joel Osteen?

·       Do you listen to Joyce Myers the same way you listen to Steven Lawson?
·       Do you know the difference between teaching of the Scriptures and preaching the Bible?
