ATTRIBUTES OF SCRIPTURE

1.  AUTHORITATIVE

“The Bible comes to us with God’s authority. This is how the Word of God addresses us.”

“What the Bible says, God says”. We owe to the Scriptures the same reverence as we own God.”

o   Hebrews 6:13. John 10:35; Matthew 5:17-18;

o   Romans 9:17; Galatians 3:8; 1 Peter 2:2-3

o   Matthew  19:4-5; Acts 4:24-25; 13:34-35; Hebrews 1:5-13; 3:7; 10:15

2.  CANONICAL

“Canon” of Scripture (the bible) is understood to be the list of books which are recognized to be, in a exclusive sense, the rule of belief and practice. The religious writings regarded as authentic and definitive and forming the very words of God.

3.  COVENANTAL

Scriptures center around two pivotal points in redemptive history:

The Mosaic Law and New Covenant:

The Books either (1) narrate the unfolding of that historical event: Genesis to Deuteronomy . Matthew to John. (2) reflect on that event: Joshua to Mal. And Acts to Revelation.

4.  INERRANT

Without error in the text of the original documents. So then since we don’t have the original is inerrant irrelevant? NO.

It enables us to confess the truthfulness of God. If there had been errors in original autographs of Scripture, then God would not be truthful

Inerrancy is limited to the autographic text, not to the autograph itself

5.  INFALLIBLE  Foolproof

To say that a text is inerrant is to say that there are no errors in it. To say that a text is infallible is to say that there can be no errors in it., that it is impossible for that text to contain errors.

6.  INSPIRED

A divine act that creates an identity between a divine word and a human word.

Exodus 19:9-11; Matthew 1:22; Acts 3:21; 4:25; 2 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1:12; 4:7; 1 Peter 1:10-12; 2 Peter 1:20-21

7.  NECESSARY

John 5:39; 20:30-31; 1 John 5:13

8.  PERSPICIOUS

Of acute mental vision or discernment

9.  PURE

10.            SPIRIT-INTERPRETED

The Holy Spirit is not given to us in order to introduce new revelations, but to impress the written word on our hearts, so that here the word must never be separated from the Spirit.

ROMANS 6:8 TO 10

¹What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? ²God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? ³Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? ⁴Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. ⁵For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: ⁶Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. ⁷For he that is dead is freed from sin. ⁸Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: ⁹Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. ¹⁰For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

NOW IF YOU HAVE DIED WITH CHRIST:

Colossians 3:1-4; 1 Peter 4:1-3 Died to sin Romans 6:2; self 2 Corinthians 5:14-15; the law Romans 7:4, 6; Galatians 2:19; the world Galatians 6:14

What happens when you died?

· To die means to be separated or to be free of something. What would the Colossians be free of in context of the present discussion? The Law. Believers "are not under law, but under grace."

So what is his point?

· Paul's reasoning is that because of these great liberating truths, a believer does not have to live like a spiritually dead man but can now live as one alive in Christ, empowered with His resurrection power), energized by the indwelling Holy Spirit as in Ephesians 3:16 and 5:18.).

Dying with Christ means not only identification with Him but dying to (from) something =

· In Galatians 6:14 , although the verb is different (crucified instead of died) the truth is similar, Paul reiterating that believers are also dead to the world for through...the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ... the world has been crucified to [us], and [we] to the world..

· Here crucified the perfect tense indicates a past completed action at a specific point in time with continuing effect, and pictures the lasting effect of our death to the world. Why do so many believers continue to make friends with the world? James 4:4

WE BELIEVE:⁴¹⁰⁰

WHAT DO WE BELIEVE? I BELIEVE IS THE KEY TO SAVING FAITH.

· We believe we have been justified.

· We believe we have died to the sin with Hm.

· We believe we have been baptized into His death.

· We believe we have been raised to walk in the newness of His life in us.

· We believe this very moment, every day.

· We believe each morning we get up that Christ lives in me, which in reality keeps my life from sin day by day.

· We believe with conviction that as I see the reality of a changed life, that I have died to the power of sin in my life.

THAT WE SHALL ALSO LIVE ^{(4800) SUZAO WITH HIM}

· Here is exactly what Paul is trying to relate to us. Christ has put His DNA in us. (Bob Temple last Sunday)

· We shall also live with Christ: Christ lives in us in the Person of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ. His life is in us His DNA as it were.

· We believe his and are persuaded by it to the point that we are enabled and willing to alter our lifestyle (empowered even in this act by His grace. Christ gives us the “want to.)

· John MacArthur writes that

o The assurance that we shall also live with Him obviously applies to the believer’s ultimate and eternal presence with Christ in heaven. But the context, which focuses on holy living, strongly suggests that Paul is here speaking primarily about our living with Him in righteousness in this present life. In Greek, as in English, future tenses often carry the idea of certainty

· We shall also live with Him: again the idea is that we live by means of Hm. Sin’s dominion over us has been shattered. We now share Christ’s resurrection life here and now. And we of course shall share it for all eternity, praise the Lord. I believe Paul is speaking of the sours of our spiritual life from Christ Here Paul is saying that we as believers will be sustained in spiritual life for time now and for eternity since Christ is our life.

o We see this clearly in Philippians 1:21 and in Galatians 2:20
