I happen to believe in the Sovereign grace of God in salvation. In other words when God by His grace opens the mind of a lost sinner, that sinner who was as dead as he could be in his spiritual understanding, sees in his mind the need to believe by faith in Christ for his salvation from Hell.

As a result of God's calling him to Himself, the lost sinner desires to receive Christ into his life the Lord Jesus Christ.

It is by the teaching of the gospel of Christ that a person knows there is a need to be saved, born again, but only when the Holy Spirit opens his mind to understand that he does.

Salvation is by invitation only. We receive the invitation by believing and by faith.

WHO THEN CAN BE LOST?

Will a "loving God" condemn people who have never heard the Gospel?

We often want to feel comfortable about what we believe, you know. We want a theology that will appease our human sensitivities. Therefore we try to make God to be what He is not. And we try to fit our thinking into what we would want God to do.

We want to believe that that God will not exclude anyone because he happened to be born at the wrong place and at the wrong time. And we want to believe that scripture does not automatically assign the unevangelized to endless hell. We want to believe that if a person as never heard the gospel that person still could be saved.

THE COMMAND OF GOD: WAKE UP!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CALLED BY GOD

I Corinthians 1 :22-24 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

What is Paul referring to? Their job? Being a firefighter? Homemaker? Auditor? Waiter? General Manager ? NASCAR Racer? No. He is referring to the work of God in calling them to Himself out of darkness into light, out of death into life. You can see the meaning pretty clearly in verses 22-24: For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.



When we say God calls, we mean the work of God that unlocks our eyes to see Christ as the right and true and wise and all knowing, and the call is so compelling that we receive Him for salvation. God’s call is His life-giving order or instruction with authority. Come. If you are a believer today, that is how you came to be a believer, a Christian, or became born again,. This is how you got saved.

Now what this call of God will produce in you is exactly what is called for. In other words. God called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. The call my friend was effective, that is causing result; the desired result happened. I can tell you when God gives a call to you, it will produce what it calls for.

It is like someone comes over to you when you are in a dead sleep, and gives you a command to wake up. And you know how it is, you leap upright. In other words, when you hear the command or the call of God in your ear, you did not ponder and then decide to wake up. When God calls, you woke up. The command was “wake up” and that is what happens. That is how God raises us up from spiritual death. Only God can do it, and you know if you are a believer that is how you became a believer. That is what Ephesians 2:4 says, that God made us alive when we were dead. The truth was, you were about to sleep yourself into hell, and our gracious God woke you up to the cruelty of sin and the loveliness of a great Savior.

The Reason For The Sixty Six Books of the Bible

We have sixty six books because?

Scripture. The sixty-six books of the Protestant canon, in their original writings, comprise the verbally inspired, inerrant Word of God.

The thirty-nine books known as the Hebrew Old Testament are God-breathed, products of the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, and thus free from error in all that they affirm (cf. Deuteronomy 18:18-19) Psalms 18:7-8, 142; 151, 160; Matthew 5:17-19; John 10:35; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21)

Similarly, the twenty-seven books known as the Greek New Testament are the eternally abiding words of Jesus Christ (Matthew 24:35, and are thus the words of God (John 7:16; 12:49). The Holy Spirit enabled the writers both to recall what the Lord said( John 14:26), and to continue to receive His revelation (John 16:12-15). As a result, the writings of the New Testament are the commandment of the Lord (1 Corinthians 14:37), are Scripture (2 Peter 3:15-16), and are God-breathed 2 Timothy 3:16).

The gospel of Christ in general is this: It is the good tidings that God has revealed concerning Christ. More largely it is this: As all mankind was lost in Adam and became the children of wrath, put under the sentence of death, God, though He left His fallen angels and has reserved them in the chains of eternal darkness, yet He has thought upon the children of men and has provided a way of atonement to reconcile them to Himself again...Namely, the second person of the Trinity takes man's nature upon Himself, and becomes the Head of a second covenant, standing charged with sin. He answers for it by suffering what the law and divine justice required, and by making satisfaction by keeping the law perfectly, which satisfaction and righteousness He tenders up to the Father as a sweet savor of rest for the souls that are given to Him...And now this mediation of Christ is, by the appointment of the Father, preached to the children of men, of whatever nation or rank, freely offering this atonement unto sinners for atonement, requiring them to believe in Him and, upon believing, promising not only a discharge of all their former sins, but that they shall not enter into condemnation, that none of their sins or unworthiness shall ever hinder the peace of God with them, but that they shall through Him be received into the number of those who shall have the image of God again to be renewed unto them, and they they shall be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.

HOW DO YOU RECONCILE FREE WILL AND ELECTION?

In this second part of the lesson on Wednesday, I didn't get into Creation, but was ask the following question:

It is true that God has from all eternity chosen whom He will save. It is true that Christ came specifically to save those whom the Father had given Him. But it is also true that Christ offers Himself freely to all men as their Savior, and guarantees to bring to glory everyone who trust in Him as such. Note how He Himself deliberately put side by side these two thoughts: John 6:37-38.

Christ means who He says, no less when He undertakes to save all who will trust Him than when He undertakes to save all whom the Father has given Him.

(4) or does it affect the responsibility of the sinner for his reaction to the gospel.

The fact remains that a man who rejects Christ in that way becomes the cause of his own condemnation. The Bible never says that sinners miss heaven because they are not elect, but because they neglect the great salvation and because they will not repent and believe. Ezk 18:31, John 5:40.

II THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD IN GRACE GIVES US OUR ONLY HOPE OFSUCCESS IN EVANGELISM.

Let me say on the other hand, evangelism would be pointless apart from the Sovereignty of God. Why? Because of the spiritual inabililty of man in sin Paul put it this way: I Corinthians 2:14 and Romans 8:7

• 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Cor 2:14
  7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Romans 8:7
  
  

Here is what Paul is saying: Man’s failure, as a matter of fact. It is a necessity of nature, something certain and inevitable and universal and unalterable, because it is in man to do otherwise than fail.

1. And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins Eph 2:1
2. Wholly incapacitated for any positive response to God’s word
3. Deaf to God’s speech blind to God’s revelation
4. Not influenced to God’s inducement
   

Why? Eph 2:2 Satan is active in this matter. 2 Corin 4:4 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR REACHING PEOPLE FOR CHRIST?

It means quite simply, that evangelism, described as we have described it, cannot possibly succeed.

TWO VIEWS OF GOD’S WORK IN SALVATION AND MAN’S RESPONSIBILITY

CAUTION: HEAR BOTH VIEWS TO MAKE THE CONNECTION.

The fact remains that God in the gospel really does offer and promise justification and life to “whosoever will.” Romans 10:13. As God commands all men everywhere to repent, so God invites all men everywhere to come to Christ and find mercy.

Definition of Evangelism:

1. Is a task appointed to all God’s people everywhere. It is the task of communicating the message from the God to bring about salvation to mankind.
2. The message begins with information and ends with an invitation. (I am not talking about a church invitation at th end of the service)
3. The information concerns the work of God of making His Son a just right Saviour for sinners.
4. The invitation is God’s summons to mankind generally to come to the Saviour and find life.
   God commands all men everywhere to repent, and promises forgiveness and salvation to all who do. (Acts 17:30)
5. The Christian is sent into the world as Christ’s speak and Christ’s ambassador, to sent forth this message as far and wide as he can. It’s a duty, it’s a command, it’s a privilege to tell people about Christ.

HOW IF THE ABOVE IS TRUE, AND IT IS, HOW IS ALL THIS AFFECTED BY OUR BELIEF IN THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD?

I LOVE TRAINS AND BIBLICAL THEOLOGY

Surely God’s Word is plain enough in teaching that believing is not a meritorious act. It affirms that Christians are a people "who have believed through grace" (Acts 18:27). If then, they have believed "through grace," there is absolutely nothing meritorious about "believing," and if nothing meritorious, it could not be the ground or cause which moved God to choose them. No; God’s choice proceeds not from anything in us, or anything from us, but solely from His own sovereign pleasure. Once more, in Romans 11:5, we read of "a remnant according to the election of grace." There it is, plain enough; election itself is of grace, and grace is unmerited favour something for which we had no claim upon God whatsoever. Mr. Pink

TO WIN A SOUL TO CHRIST?

What is the real winning of a soul for God?

So far as this is done by instrumentality, what are the processes by which a soul is led to God and to salvation?

I take it that one of its main operations consists in instructing a man that he may know the truth of God. Instruction by the gospel is the commencement of all real work upon men's minds.

• "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."

Teaching begins the work, and crowns it, too.

The gospel, according to Isaiah, is,

• "Incline your ear, and come unto Me: hear, and your soul shall live."

It is ours, then, to give men something worth their hearing; in fact, to instruct them. We are sent to evangelize, or to preach the gospel to every creature; and that is not done unless we teach them the great truths of revelation. The gospel is good news.

To listen to some preachers, you would imagine that the gospel was a pinch of sacred snuff to make them wake up, or a bottle of ardent spirits to excite their brains.

It is nothing of the kind; it is news, there is information in it, there is instruction in it concerning matters which men need to know, and statements in it calculated to bless those who hear it.

It is not a magical incantation, or a charm, whose force consists in a collection of sounds; it is a revelation of facts and truths which require knowledge and belief.

The gospel is a reasonable system, and

it appeals to men's understanding;

it is a matter for thought and consideration, and

it appeals to the conscience and the reflecting powers.

Hence, if we do not teach men something, we may shout, "Believe! Believe! Believe!" but what are they to believe? Each exhortation requires a corresponding instruction, or it will mean nothing.

"Escape!" From what? This requires for its answer the doctrine of the punishment of sin.

"Fly!" But whither? Then must you preach Christ, and His wounds; yea, and the clear doctrine of atonement by sacrifice.

"Repent!" Of what? Here you must answer such questions as,

What is sin? What is the evil of sin? What are the consequences of sin ? "Be converted!" But what is it to be converted? By what power can we be converted? What from? What to?

The field of instruction is wide if men are to be made to know the truth which saves. "That the soul be without knowledge, it is not good," and it is ours as the Lord's instruments to make men so to know the truth that they may believe it, and feel its power.

We are not to try and save men in the dark, but in the power of the Holy Ghost we are to seek to turn them from darkness to light.

Teach gospel doctrines clearly, affectionately, simply, and plainly, and especially those truths which have a present and practical bearing upon man's condition and God's grace.

Watch your thoughts; they become words.

WE PRAY THAT 2009 WILL BE A YEAR THAT YOU GIVE GOD, AND JESUS CHRIST THE GLORY THAT HE DESERVES

As we start with God, and Jesus Christ as Lord,

we start right.

It's not so much things we want to do or accomplish

its starts with a knowing

Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 5:22-23 James 2:14-26

So, is Lordship Salvation Biblical? Again, it cannot be denied that faith in Christ produces a change 2 Corinthians 5:17. A person who has been delivered from sin by faith in Christ should not desire to remain in a life of sin (Romans 6:2). At the same time, submitting to the Lordship of Jesus Christ is an issue of spiritual growth, not salvation. The Christian life is a process of submitting to God in increasing measure (2 Peter 1:5-8). A person does not have to submit to God in every area of his or her life in order to be saved. A person simply has to recognize that he or she is a sinner, in need of Jesus Christ for salvation, and place trust in Him (John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9). Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2:10). Christians absolutely should submit to Him (James 4:7). A changed life and submission to Christ's lordship are the result of salvation, not a requirement for salvation.

SHORTER SERMONS NEEDED TO WIN SINNERS?

“Few sinners are saved after the first 20 minutes of a sermon.” - Mark Twain

I am amused... Mark Twain to my knowledge was not a Believer. Sinner yes. I do agree that sinners are not saved after a 20 minute sermon or a ten minute sermon.

I am not amused. When the goal of your sermon on Sunday is to sinners and unbelievers, it's going to take more than 20 minutes. As a matter of fact, it's not really the sermon as much as the working of the Holy Spirit in the sinner's mind and heart that does the saving.

In today's mindset of a lot of ministers, the shorter the sermon they say is better. Why? The theory is the attention spans of people are shorter today. Which might be right, people don't listen like they have in the past.

Shorter sermons will get the message across better? So the ESPN highlight sermons will accomplish more sinners coming to Christ? Maybe a 2.56 minute sermon would do the task!

Christ needs only a few seconds to bring a sinner unto Himself.

• But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive [quickened us] with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:4-5


• “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. • IF salvation is the implantation of a new, infinite life in the soul, it must be a work of God. Self-caused effects can never rise above the character or qualities of their cause. "Flesh gives birth to flesh but the Spirit gives birth to Spirit," Jesus told Nicodemus. This saving grace cannot be caused by the creature, it can only come from God. A FOOTNOTE ON MYR CLEMENS:

• Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by the pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. Twain is most noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has since been called the Great American Novel, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He is extensively quoted. During his lifetime, Twain became a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists and European royalty. The article is interesting reading.

The Point: Length of the sermon is not the point. But in my opinion, sermons are for the spiritual growth of the Believer.

IS THE GOSPEL THE END OF THE SEARCH FOR PERSONAL HAPPINESS?

IS THE GOSPEL A STORY OF HAPPINESS TO BE ACHIEVED BY SELFISH SEARCH?

I have preached from I Thessalonians since becoming the pastor/teacher of Rivers of Joy

Bapstist Church in July. The subject of the Gospel has taken up a lot of the sermons I have preached. I don't think a lot of folks today know what the gospel is biblically.

What is the gospel?

Folks in the most interesting places are asking that question these days. When I was growing up, in the 50's and 60's no one had to ask what the gospel was. We knew. It was the answer to the question: "If you were to die tonight, how do you know for sure you'd go to heaven?" The gospel was what got you saved. We knew what getting saved was, too. Getting saved was being placed in the heaven-bound category. And we knew what heaven was. Heaven was the pleasure place where everybody wanted to go after death. Hell was not our place to want to go.

But now folks like N.T. Wright (from a New Testament historical perspective), and Dallas Willard (from a spiritual formation and discipleship perspective), and Shane Claiborne (from a community perspective), and Brian McLaren (from a general gadfly perspective), are calling us to rethink what the gospel really means. So what do I think about these new ideas about the Gospel. I have spent a few weeks at Rivers of Joy Baptist Church on this subject.

A journal called Journal of Happiness Studies. "Positive psychology" is the big new trend in social science over the last decade, so all kinds of researchers have decided to explore the northern rather than southern hemisphere of human emotions. "Aspirations, along with attainments, play an important role in shaping well-being." I checked out a few of their articles on their website.

One theme that keeps popping up is the happiness paradox: "the more directly one aims to maximize pleasure and avoid pain, the more likely one is to produce a life lacking of depth, meaning, and community." One article listed facets of the happiness paradox. Another explained the principle of indirection: happiness, by its nature, cannot be obtained by direct pursuit. You have to sneak up on it. Or rather, you have to let it sneak up on you while you're pursuing something more important. "You know how to sneak up on a rabbit?"

It struck me that the traditional expression of the gospel I heard growing up fell into a similar trap. There was not much serious thought about the true nature of heaven. (If you've been avoiding God all your life, would you want to be in heaven? It appears that God will be very hard to avoid there.)

Maybe the "if you were to die tonight" version of the gospel falls victim to the happiness paradox. If "heaven" is understood as "ultimate happiness," then I can seek to obtain it while remaining trapped in my self-centeredness. If "heaven" is understood as the eternal pleasure place, then obtaining it has no intrinsic relationship to transformation, therefore no intrinsic relationship to discipleship. And if you note, most people's opinion of their heaven, is beautful and full of happeness and fun things to do, with no regard to any personal change in our life-style on earth, waiting to get to heaven. Maybe a few prayers a few times a day, and maybe wearing a set of black clothes and covering my face, etc.

But if the gospel really is the announcement of the availability, through Jesus, of the "with-God life," then things begin to fall into place. Grace is not just the forgiveness of sin, it is the power to live the with-God life from one moment to the next. Heaven is not a pleasure place that an angry God chooses to shut some people out of because they don't pass a theology test; it is a community of servanthood that can only be enjoyed by a certain kind of character.

Discipleship or obedience is not something we have to sweet-talk people into by obligation or gratitude ("after all, Jesus died for you; the least you can do is deny yourself happiness for a while on earth"), it is simply the process of learning to enter into the good, with-God life. The gospel becomes social as well as personal—not because individuals don't matter, but because to be "saved" means (among other things) to be delivered from the chronic selfishness that contributes to the world's hurt and to my misery.

We do have a ways to go on one great task regarding the gospel. And that is how to articulate a biblically sound, spiritually powerful gospel in a way that calls for great clarity of decision.

• The reason the old "if you were to die tonight" gospel was so popular (and, I think, has been used by God to a large degree), is that at least it helps people be very clear that they've made a decision about something. ("I'm not going to earn my way anymore; I'm on the grace plan.") And that decision itself is often enough to start people on the road toward God.

In our day, I think, we are seeing more accurate ways of understanding the gospel. But we need clarion calls of directness to help people respond today.

When Jesus walked the earth, the call "Follow me" was easily understood. People would actually, physically, bodily, walk with Jesus. People knew if they were following.

When the church formed, the call to follow Jesus was easily understood. There was an alternative community that met daily, that radically transformed people's financial lives, social lives, time, learning, allegiances, and hope. People knew if they were following.

In our day, that experience has become so diluted and enculturated that people have a hard time knowing.

• The availability of life, with God, in his favor and power, as a gift of grace we receive by repentance and trust, through the death and resurrection of Jesus—that's the gospel with power.

What needs still to be done is to find ways to express this with great clarity and simplicity, ways to help ordinary people know for sure they have made the great decision, the great commitment of their lives.

BIBLICAL CHRISTIANITY LIFESTYLE IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN HOLLYWOOD LIFESTYLE

WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? WHAT ARE WE SAVED FROM?

LET ME SAY AGAIN........

The real problem is sin and guilt. That's the issue. God sent Jesus Christ to rescue us from the consequence of our sin, and everybody falls into the category of sinner. It doesn't matter whether you're among the haves or the have-nots, whether you have great expectations or none at all, whether you're consumed by your passions or exhibit a degree of self-control and discipline-you are still a sinner. You have broken the law of God and He's angry about it. Unless something happens to change your condition, you're on your way to eternal hell. You need to be rescued from the consequences of your sin. Those are the principal issues the gospel solves.

The truth is, even when you are delivered from the ultimate danger of God's wrath against sin, you might never realize your dreams. When you come to Christ, the Lord realigns your thinking so that all you ever wanted, all you used to strive for, you count as loss, waste, garbage (cf. Paul in Phil. 3:4-8). Coming to Christ means the end of you. Also, though you'll experience the power of the Holy Spirit to gain victory over sin, you may never attain total dominance over your drives and passions this side of heaven. Like Paul, you will strive with sin to your dying day (cf. Rom. 7:13-25). Issues of fulfillment and sinful passions will be dealt with, in the Lord's time and in the Lord's way. So if you've come to Christ primarily to find fulfillment or to escape from bad habits, Jesus may not be what you're looking for.

Its Just Not Bibical - Same Sex Marriage

Perfectly normal people who do not have normal sex drives will do some un normal things. In their mind I would think, they believe its as normal as any other marriage. Their minds can be trained to believe a lie about life, marriage and sex, as it is meant to be.

SIN is the system that brings in the belief that God and the Bible is not the means whereby we make our decisions about living, life, marriage and sex. The natural mind is blinded to those things that are spiritual in natural. SIN I believe is the DNA of the nature of man. Within the nature of man is the gene principle that is natural for the mind to be against what God says is right or wrong. Our very being is naturally set against the truths that God has set forth in the Bible. You don't have to be a moral bad person to have this DNA of sin within you. It is in every human person ever born. The truth is every person has a negative desire to be in obediences with just about any law of God or man. Few want to obey the laws of their parents, their government and God's. Its natural to want to go 65 mph rather than the law of 55 mph. Its in the natural of a person. Its natural for the youngest child to disobey what his parents wish for them to do. Babies cry often because they are not getting what they want. Children throw a fit in K Mart when they can not buy a toy of their choice. Its natural, its in the DNA of the nature.

So when they become an adult, they see nothing wrong with doing what they have always desired, if it seems right for them to do, its right for them to do. Its natural for them to see nothing wrong with same sex marriage.

The probem is SIN, its in every person. And of course you don't see your behaviour as SIN.

To solve the probem of SIN is to have a born again change of nature. There needs to be a born again experience. And only through the work of Jesus Christ can a person under go this born again change of nature.

Only Jesus Christ can made the difference in the mind and nature of the person who has a the mindset of set in rebellion against the laws of mankind and God.
