HOW TO REACH THIS CURRENT GENERATION

PEOPLE THAT DON'T KNOW MUST LEARN

GROW BY LEARNING

Charity asked me the other day, "How did you decide to use the name "Grow By Learning?" And I said "Proverbs 1:2, Proverbs 1:3 and Proverbs 1:5 (now point to those and see the verses)

Charity took this photo of me Sunday Evening at Rivers of Joy Baptist Church. I am getting a Library room ready. Here are a few of my three ring binders of articles I have downloaded from the web and study notes.

Also at Rivers of Joy I am working on my Pastor's Office
Back in Altoona Kansas I also had a great pastor's office. Kurt Nunnenkamp built us a wall to wall book shelf. Who is that guy with dark hair anyway?
A closer look, at the book shelves that Kurt built.

Charity and Kyle loved my office too.

GROW BY LEARNING

If there is anything I love to do it is learning. I loved the library. I would spend hours in my Dad's library as a child and as a youth. I would spend hours at school in the library, both High School and College. When I lived in Texas, Kansas or Kentucky. I would love going to the local public library. Then I had a nice library myself.

When I was pastor at Madison Baptist in Minford, Ohio in 1971 I had a nice library / office.
(I don't have photos of those, wish I had.)

When I went to First Baptist in Altoona, Kansas I had a very nice pastor's office, And a great church library. . And then in Calvary Baptist Church in Connersville Indiana, I had book shelves built in my office.

The point of this post was not to be about my library. I wanted to mention the LEARNING process that I spent yesterday doing.

HOW TO BETTER GET THE MESSAGE OUT ABOUT RIVERS OF JOY BAPTIST CHURCH

I woke up yesterday early, my mind was really working overtime. How can I learn to put our church on the web. The web is here and we should learn to use the medium. Some one moves to town, or is going to move to Scioto County and they are looking for a church. Really. How can we provide the means whereby they can find us on the web.

We are going to have to prepare for the future. As our church members are getting older, we need to give attention to the younger group. We need to meet the needs of us that are older, but we need to seek to reach our youth and young adults as well.

I don't believe we can reach the now generation with the methods that we used when we were younger. Have you seen what our children (3-7) are doing these days? Our teens today are way more advanced than we were.

If we are going to reach those that are younger than we are, we must learn how to reach them.

To cont.

UPDATING YESTERDAY'S TOOLS

SOMETIMES YESTERDAY'S TOOLS CAN BE USEFUL

1983 Model (but good for occasional use)

Sometimes the orginial products are good. Pre-internet times, pre email times, just the word processor. Of course the 1983 Model provided me with some great help. When you pastor a 1950 church, a 1983 mindset can be taxing for a lot of folks. But when a 1950 church can upgrade their mindset, there will be some progress.

Life for most of use moves a little too fast for us to keep up. Sometimes we just stop moving with the times we are living in.

Last night Charity and I went shopping. I wanted to be able to record my messages on Sunday. The tape recorder is outdated. I have one and 1000 tapes. I asked the tech, "What do I use to record." A Digital Voice Recorder he said. A RCA DigitalVoice is 3 1/2" by 1 1/1". And you can plug it in your computer, downland the messages, and put it on your website. I know old stuff, but I will get caught up. And the my cell phone is not a Blueberry iPhone. What's up?

I called Frankie last night, "Frankie how do you present your material at work." "With a power point on the PC." What? What happen to the chalk board?

Why does the local church believe you need to say in the 1950's when it comes to ministry? But there needs to be balance. Yet at the same time we need to be updated.

GOOGLE READER FEEDBURNER and PSALMS and FRIENDS

GOOGLE READER

The link will give you direction as to how to use a RSS. Its a new way of reading your favorite websites. Read Google Reader 101 for the information. Great stuff. I am only at the 101 level here so I still have a lot of learning to go. But as the blogger or weblogger says GROW BY LEARNING Keep growing, it's good for your brain. I will change to just get better.

RSS FEEDER

If you want to read this blog in another format my address for the RSS is found here. I am getting good at this 101 stuf

NOTES ON THE READER

I am posting NOTES also on the Google Reader that will be different from this Blog.

NOTES FROM FRIENDS

Charity and I realize we are busy people, and tired at the end of the day. Sitting down and watching TV seems to be the norm for tired folks at the end of a working day. But if we get inspired, we find ourselves doing some good projects.

Taking the time to focus on projects is really a discipline to accomplish. We can control our activity by discipline. Doing an activity 21 days will lead to a habit. Eating takes one day. Tuesday's is House and NCSI on TV and when they moved it to MONDAY I missed the finals.

When I don't leave the house at 10 to get to work by 11, I am late. When I am focused on a project I find myself tuned in to seeing it accomplished.

Thanks for the emails we have received, thanks for the Updates on your family. It's good to stay in touch with friends. "I wonder what Allen Barnhart is doing." Most likely what he has been doing for twenty years. Charlie Cox ? Randy Webb? (He does keep us updated) Shawn and Nicki Hines keep us updated. My good friend is DeWayne Prosser, he is still preaching, think of that. Only to name a few. Thanks, Charity and I enjoy them.

Psalms 16

  1. Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

  2. O my soul, thou hast said unto the LORD, Thou art my LORD; my goodness extendeth not to thee (I have no good beyond thee);

  3. but to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

  4. Their sorrow shall be multiplied that hasten after another god; their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

  • The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup; thou maintainest my lot.

I will bless the LORD, who hath given me counsel; my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

  • I have set the LORD always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth; my flesh also shall rest in hope (dwell in safety).

  • Thou wilt show me the path of life; in thy presences is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

CHARLES ON HIS NEW JOHN DEERE

CHARLES ON HIS NEW JOHN DEERE

Folks after six years pushing a lawn mower cutting this lawn at our home, Gary Pendletion provided me with this JOHN DEERE 318. Now is that class our what?

I almost thought I would have to take John Deere Driving lessons! Kidding.

So what a week so far. Upgraded from the 56 dial up to the hp DSL. Now the problem is having the line phone ringing with all those Telemarketers.

Tonight, Charity took these pictures and I was able to download them on to the computer, and put them on the Blogger. Now is that 21st Century or what?

STILL WORKING ON THE NEW SET UP

.
Upgrading is still in the works this week. Coming into the 21st Century is a learning process. Grow By Learning is the name of this Blog and its true in many ways. From Windows 98 to Windows XP Home is like driving a 96 Dodge and a 08 Dodge. (Only if I have a rental)
.
And yesterday I was riding a John Deree Tractor mowing our lawn. That was a first in the seven seasons I have used a push mower. What was I thinking!
.
I am still in shock with the High Speed Internet DSL. I could before DSL drink a cup of coffee before I pulled up a website. But its good. Ok so life on the Web starts at 60. Like it.
.
And Google Reader is really good. So is Mozilla Firefox. So is Microsoft Word and Office 2007.

FINALLY NEW CHANGES ON THE BLOG

^

As you can see there are some new features on this blog today for the first time. We want to made this Blogger more resourceful for our guests and friends to view.
-
Since August 2006 we have posted 358 articles and posts. Who is going to view those one at a time? Of course if you want to know Charles/Charity's ministry you could get a good idea if you view the first fifty posts.
-
SUBJECT LABELS OF EACH POST
  • The next best idea is to view posts by subjects. Blogger has provided the means whereby you can do that. I started labeling each post in 2007 andwill need to go back and work on the posts in 2006. There is a list of subject labels on the sidebar. You click on a subject of interest and you will be directed to all posts on that subject. How good is that? Blogger has done well with this. It's I who has taken this long to figure out how to get that list on the side bar. Never give up folks, you can learn at sixty if you never give up. You might be white haired before you can get it, but I like my white hair. You know Stephen is right! (Ellen's smart son )
ARCHIVES:

  • I hope I have made it easier to view the posts. I have on the side bar a list of the last month's articles. You can view and click on any article and Blogger will take you directly to the article.

LINKS TO OTHER BLOOGERS AND WEBSITES

  • I am going to work on specific links (websites) that I like very much and will have those listed on the side bar as well soon.
LIST OF BOOKS FOR RESOURCE MATERIAL

  • Also I have listed a series of books that I have read or am reading, and they will be listed at the end of each post. You will need to click on the time listed at the end of each posts, and you will be directed to that single blog. At the end of the page will be that list of books I read.
COMMENTS
  • Comments on Blogger is a little hard, they require that you have a blog or fill out a form. To many that is a little too much for a comment. Thus, the comments I get are from e mail. I receive a number of e mails. I really like that method the best. My e mail can be found on my profile page. CWhisna@aol.com
Blogger offers several more features that I have not used but in the future I hope to begin using them.
-
The idea of GROW BY LEARNING BLOG is to provide as much resource as possible for the guests and friends of ours. There are 1000's of people who have blogs, many are just wonderful websites.
  • One example of being helpful without knowing it at the time. Someone googled my name (that is really shocking) and found our BLOGGER and found the article about Charity's mother Lenora passing away. She didn't know that until she read our post.
ADDITIONAL WEB SITE IN THE MAKING
  • My lovely sister Ellen Samples is learning this Blogger too. Her daughter April Williams has already just about mastered this .com business. Well, Ellen had the idea that a .com site would be good to have. So she found a website host, and decided to craft her brother a website. She did all the work putting together the art work and found the templates and Ellen designed the site. Then she turned the web over to me. Now how did she do this? That is the question? I will post the address later.
E MAILS
  • I have discovered that I can automatically have each post I write e mailed to an individual, how scary is that! What I generally do, is e mail a list of friends giving them a heads up what the post I have just written is about. Some like this better. I proved a direct link to our blogger, which makes it easier to click and read. Sometimes I write articles on the email that I have not yet or might not post on the Blogger.
THERE YOU HAVE THE NEW UPDATES FOR 2008. WHO KNOWS WHAT ELSE WE WILL BE LEARNING THIS YEAR. MAY YOU PRAY THOUGHTFULLY, MAY YOU THINK BIBLICALLY DAILY.
-
Please remember when reading any article or viewing any post, that you keep in mind, that I love the Lord, I love my wife, I love ministry, and I love my friends, and some of my detractors. I want to be helpful, and Christ-like in what I post.
-
Pray for Charity and me when you read these posts. Pray that the Lord will open the doors for ministry in a local church in 2008. Pray for Charity and me as we work in the workplace that we might be a light in a dark world, and that we can be an encouragement to those who need to be encouraged.
