Reason For Expositional Preaching #1

As I watch John MacArthur's series on Reasons why we need to preach expositional I use one of those reasons on Sunday, and some others helps in bible study.  As I have said for 40 years If John has said it I will not be far behind saying it.

Advice That Is Not Received

Often people who are in trouble with their lives, don't want to listen to Scriptural advice. They want to talk to you but they don't want to listen to what you say.  Therefore the result will be zero in their learning the way God want's them to live out their live in holiness.

Listening to the Word of God and apply them to your life will bring peace in your heart.

Scripture is God's Gift To Believers

HOLY SCRIPTURE GOD’S GIFT TO THE CHURCH
Charles e. Whisnant
April 24, 2011
ATTRIBUTES OF SCRIPTURE
1.  AUTHORITATIVE
“The Bible comes to us with God’s authority. This is how the Word of God addresses us.”
“What the Bible says, God says”. We owe to the Scriptures the same reverence as we own God.”
o   Hebrews 6:13. John 10:35; Matthew 5:17-18;
o   Romans 9:17; Galatians 3:8; 1 Peter 2:2-3
o   Matthew  19:4-5; Acts 4:24-25; 13:34-35; Hebrews 1:5-13; 3:7; 10:15

2.  CANONICAL
“Canon” of Scripture (the bible) is understood to be the list of books which are recognized to be, in a exclusive sense, the rule of belief and practice. The religious writings regarded as authentic and definitive and forming the very words of God.

3.  COVENANTAL
Scriptures center around two pivotal points in redemptive history:
The Mosaic Law and New Covenant:
The Books either (1) narrate the unfolding of that historical event: Genesis to Deuteronomy . Matthew to John. (2) reflect on that event: Joshua to Mal. And Acts to Revelation.

4.  INERRANT
Without error in the text of the original documents. So then since we don’t have the original is inerrant irrelevant? NO.
It enables us to confess the truthfulness of God. If there had been errors in original autographs of Scripture, then God would not be truthful
Inerrancy is limited to the autographic text, not to the autograph itself

5.  INFALLIBLE  Foolproof
To say that a text is inerrant is to say that there are no errors in it. To say that a text is infallible is to say that there can be no errors in it., that it is impossible for that text to contain errors.
Number 23:19; John 17:17; Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18

6.  INSPIRED
A divine act that creates an identity between a divine word and a human word.
Exodus 19:9-11; Matthew 1:22; Acts 3:21; 4:25; 2 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1:12; 4:7; 1 Peter 1:10-12; 2 Peter 1:20-21

7.  NECESSARY
John 5:39; 20:30-31; 1 John 5:13

8.  PERSPICIOUS
Of acute mental vision or discernment

9.  PURE
Lenigrad Codex (1008 AD): Oldest and only extant codex (paperback today) containing the entire Old Testament.

10.            SPIRIT-INTERPRETED
Isaiah 59:21; John 16:13-14; Romans 8:16; 1 Corinthians 2:10-16; I John 2:20, 27
The Holy Spirit is not given to us in order to introduce new revelations, but to impress the written word on our hearts, so that here the word must never be separated from the Spirit.

11.            SUFFICIENT
John 20:30-31; 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Passion for the Glory of God

God has been very good to us in the NT by giving us many different ways of seeing the greatness of his glory. I am going to mention eleven of these in the hope that one or several will sink into your heart and give you a longing for for God's glory. I am not going to define it first, but just let the texts point you to the reality.

1. God shows that his glory is very great by saying that it is eternal. Romans 11:36, "For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory for ever. Amen." The greatness of God's glory is seen in the fact that it will never end. It is great in durability and permanence.

2. God shows the greatness of his glory by contrasting it with the frail and temporary glory of the world. 1 Peter 1:24, "All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord abides for ever."

"Flesh" in that verse simply refers to all that is not spiritual. All the accomplishments of natural man are like grass and all their glory -- engineering glory, architectural glory, artistic glory, electrical glory, atomic glory, computerized glory -- all our greatest human glory is like a dandelion ball compared to God's permanent glory.

C.S. Lewis preached a great sermon on June 8, 1941 called "The Weight of Glory". He said, "Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations -- these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat." And if the greatest glories of the world are to us as the life of a gnat, how much greater must be the God of glory in whom we live and move and have our being.

3. God shows the greatness of his glory by speaking of its might and power. Colossians 1:11, "May you be strengthened with all power, according to the might of his glory." And 2 Thessalonians 1:9 turns it around and speaks of "the glory of his might." The point is not very different: the glory of God shines forth in great power, and the power of God exhibits itself in great glory.

If you want to conceive of the glory of God in its proper proportions, dwell on the scope of God's power. How great is the power of God when Isaiah 40 says "He measured the seas in the hollow of his hands... and weighed the mountains in scales"; and when Daniel 4 says, "He does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth, and none can stay his hand, or say to him, What doest Thou?" and when Hebrews 1:3 says "He upholds the universe by his word of power." God is exceedingly powerful beyond all imagination, and his power is only one expression of his glory. Therefore his glory is very great.

Passion for the Glory of God

Have you notice there is a lot of passion in the world today. Most of the passion seems to be evil passion, like lust, anger, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, divisions, envy, self love, and we could go on.

Sports, entertainment, recreation and the pursuit of personal happiness. And we really are expected to be deiriously excitedabout things like that. You don't go to a Dallas Cowboy's football game and just set there.

But we are not expected to be so excited about the glory of the Lord. We are seen as seriously imbalance if we express our love for the glory of the Lord.

THE JUDGE, THE VERDICT, AND THE REDEMPTION

The Judge is God, the Verdict is:  "Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall be no flesh be justified in His sight."  All have sinned and come short of the Glory of God.    There is non righteous, no, not one.

In our study of the book of Romans: we learn that all mankind is guilty before God.  All are condemned.

"BUT NOW... Jesus Christ has paid the price for SIN and made possible our SALVATION."

Charles e. Whisnant Activity on Thursday

Now you know what I do during the day! I was at Chad's house and he beat me twice at ping pong.

ALL THE LIFE OF THE PASTOR/TEACHER EACH WEEK

So what does a preacher/pastor/teacher do? You usually don't really know do you? Oh we are on Facebook every moment of the day? We play golf twice a week. Well no. I text 100 times a day? No. So what do I do?

Usually we don't do what the people want us to do. Do we. I myself don't know what I should be doing all the time. It is usually something I had not planned on doing too.

I know what I need to do each week?
  1. Prepare for the Bible Study on Sunday: Proverbs.
  2. Prepare for Sunday Morning sermons: Romans
  3. Prepare for Sunday Night sermons: Philippians, and others topics
  4. Prepare for Wednesday Night lesson: Biblical View of Prayer
  5. Outlines of all sermons and print them each week.
  6. Video all lessons I do one Sunday and Wednesday
  7. Prepare videos to download on Vimeo and YouTube. At least three 40 minute videos and also special songs by singers at church.
  8. Write articles on my websites.
  9. Presently working on the church financial program.
  10. Oh, cutting the lawn at Union Mills
  11. Oh, cutting the yard at our house.
  12. Watching NCSI on Tuesday.
  13. Checking out e mails
  14. Reading over 110 current blogs each day.
  15. Love searching material on the web about ministry.
  16. Downloading my outlines on Slideshare.
  17. Communicating with my staff of pastors.
  18. Getting Charity coffee in the mornings.
  19. I am getting tired already.

THE PURPOSE OF THE PASTOR AND TEACHER

As you know I have followed John MacArthur, Jr now for most of my ministry. I first listen to a tape of John's in 1973 when I was the pastor of Madison Baptist Church, in Minford, Ohio.

Then I began to receive his sermon tapes in 1983 and started studying under him. I have made this no secret that John has been my guide in my preaching.

And I have also tried to have the kind of church that Grace Community Church has had. Of course that does not mean in size, but in principle. Since I have been at the church on two occasion at the Shepherd's Conferences, and several mini conferences in other places.

The phrase I have often uses. "DOING GOD'S WORK IN GOD'S WAY," comes from the study of John's work.

Another principle that I have often uses, and is in this clip video. '

"The most important part of the ministry of the Pastor/Teacher of a church is this: The teaching of the Word of God to the people of the church."

This is what I have tried to do over the years, teach the word of God verse by verse.

My Movie 2

I really enjoy this way of putting together photos. And putting music to the movie was good too. I just keep learning. I wish I had the photo that was lost on the old computer. So I need to start over again.
