Mom must have been a teenager when she went to a Tent Meeting where Dad was preaching, and she want to be a part of the ministry.  And for the next few years starting working with Dad, and she learn to play the piano, and later they were married.

 

Dad was on Radio in the 30's. and was on Radio until he died in 1966.  The Voice of Calvary was the title of the Radio ministry.

The Mutual Broadcasting System (commonly referred to as simply Mutual; sometimes referred to as MBS, the Mutual Broadcasting Company, or the Mutual Radio Network; corporate name Mutual Broadcasting System, Inc.) was an American radio network in operation from 1934 to 1999. In the golden age of U.S. radio drama, Mutual was best known as the original network home of The Lone Ranger and The Adventures of Superman and as the long-time radio residence of The Shadow. For many years, it was a national broadcaster for Major League Baseball (including the All-Star Game and World Series), the National Football League, and Notre Dame football. From the mid-1930s and for decades after, Mutual ran a highly respected news service accompanied by a variety of popular commentary shows. Toward the end of its run as a major programmer, it introduced the country to Larry King.

 

The station was signed on in 1949 by the Raleigh News and Observer as WNAO-FM to simulcast sister station WNAO, 850 AM.^[ The stations were sold to Sir Walter Television effective February 13, 1953.^[4] In 1959 the station became WKIX-FM, simulcasting much of sister AM WKIX's top 40 format. This move was out of necessity as WKIX-AM's 10 kW signal was powered down to a directional 5 kW at night, preventing the station from having full area coverage. In 1972, WKIX-FM changed format to easy listening WYYD. The station became a satellite MOR station in 1983 and two years later changed its letters to WYLT ("Lite 96.1"), playing soft adult contemporary music.

Mom started going to Dad's tent meetings when she was sixteen I am told. So if Mom was born in 1923 that would have been 1939.  I was born in 1947 October.  Mom and Dad were married I guess around 1944-46 (?).

She is now 92 years old and lives in Roanoke, VA.

Dad was an evangelist before he was a pastor. He and Johnny Johnes traveled wit hthis tent a number of times, and Dad was still doing this when I was born.

Method of Teaching the Bible

METHOD OF PREACHING/TEACHING THE SCRIPTURES

While reading from Google Reader today I read two articles on PREACHING. One was from Larry who was quoting from another, which I also read.

I have for the most part of my ministry of preaching used the method of book by book.

When I was a teenager in 1963 in the youth class I taught from Psalms and Revelation.

When I was pastor/teacher at Madison Missionary Baptist Church in Minford Ohio, 1971-73 I taught the book of Hebrews and Revelation.

When I went to First Baptist Church in Altoona, Kansas, 1980-1996 Most of the messages went about 40 to 50 minutes.

• Matthew, Acts, Romans, I Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, (some 80 messages) 1 Thessalonians (first two chapters), Philemon, Revelation, and 1 Timothy (first two chapters). Teaching on Sunday Morning and Sunday Night.
  

Currently pastor/teacher at Rivers of Joy Baptist Church, Minford, Ohio , 2008-currently

• 1 Thessalonians (chapter 1-2). Currently: Philippians (some 45 sermons) (chapter 1 -2) and Romans (chapters 1-2) over the last two years.
  

I learned from John MacArthur this method. John has preached 40 years at Grace, and 25 years he has taught Matthew, Luke and John. He is in Mark in his 40^th year of preaching.

SO WHY DO I PREACH/TEACH LIKE THIS?

Larry Rogier, pastor, gives three reasons which reflects my reasons from a personal perspective

1. It is how God gave the Bible – verse by verse. (Well, not really verse by verse.)
   
2. It forces a pastor to address things he might not otherwise address because, let's face it, it is easier to skip some verses than to preach them, whether because of difficulty (not sure what to say about it) or laziness (don't feel like studying it.)
   
3. It makes my week easier because I know what I am going to preach.
   

I will add to this list

1. It keeps me on a text of scripture and keeps me from getting on one of my pet peeves.
   
2. It keeps me teaching rather than preaching at the people. I am teaching God's word and not mine.
   

I have no problem in telling people to listen to other preachers: To name just a few.

In others words I am not the fundamentalist who believes I am the only voice that our membership should ever hear. I would say there are many preachers who I would say are great to learn from. The ones I have mentioned are high profile and easy to find on the web and easy to read their books, and have tapes, or DVD's. Now the Podcast's are becoming a great tool to listen to as well.

But the whole point of preaching the word is to teach God's Word and not my words.

The method is good for me. The method is not as important as the content of the Bible.

While I do not generally preach or teach an Old Testament book, I reference many verses that are in the Old Testament.

Of course I have taught Bible lessons from the whole Bible. Since I do teach Sunday School, or Bible Study. Currently I am teaching from the book of Proverbs.

GOD WILL GIVE US HIS LIGHT TO SHINE IN HIS TIME

There are times I am human and I like to watch one of my favorite series: BABYLON 5. So today I watched season five episodes 21 and 22 . Its the end of the five year run of the series. I was living in Lexington KY. and waiting for the Lord to give me another assignment. Sometimes waiting for the assignment was a mental struggle for me. I never really give up hope but was a little worried. After five years in Lexington, and then eight years in Portsmouth, I was beginning to wonder. BUT GOD.

My Dad would be asked to preach in Fellowship Meetings and he would preach the sermon: BUT GOD. I believe I have never questioned God in His timing about events in our lives, but I have question people in their timing. I have never question God for any event that I might have thought negative. God is only wise, and all good in all He does. But I have sure question men in their decision to follow His direction.

GOD IS NEVER TO BE THOUGHT OF LESS THAN IN HIS PERFECTION AND HOLINESS.

This last Wednesday Night October 14, 2009 I brought a lesson on THE DECREE OF GOD. And I will post the outline is posted there and I will later post the lesson on video.

BUT GOD is not the author of Evil and Bad, only Good. But He decree all things to bring about His glory. We have dishonored God if we blame God for evil and bad things that we believe have happen to us or anyone else.

Dad love preaching, Dad loved people, Dad love his family, and Dad love the Lord. I caught that in the short time that I knew my Dad. Dad died in 1966, but he still lives in my heart today, some 42 years later. I have only a few notes Dad had in his bible. I have only a few pictures of Dad. But I have a lot of memory in my mind yet still today.

JUST THOUGHT I WOULD SAY A LITTLE ABOUT MY DAD TODAY.

"HUH? What do you mean?"

I thought that my Dad was a Fundamental Baptist preacher. Here I am in 1947, just a few months old and we are living in Lynchburg Virginia and Dad and Mom are starting church, Dad was living in Asheboro, NC and came to Lynchburg, VA to help Munford Baptist Church.

I believed my Dad started Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches.

My sister is trying to get more information about these years of Dad and Mom, I am also trying get more information myself) But it seems Dad and Mom were there about five years. During this time its my understanding that he put up a tent on the grounds on Park Ave in Lyncbhurg, and yet another church was started.

When it comes to BIBLICAL SEPARATION, HERE ARE TWO PASTORS/PREACHERS WHO HAVE PRACTICED FUNDAMENTALIST FOR A LIFE TIME.

Biblical Separation

• The same is true for neo-fundamentalists such as Jerry Falwell and the Baptist Bible Fellowship today. When I hear Jerry Falwell standing up boldly for Christ on Larry King’s television program and in other public forums, I am thankful for him and love him in the Lord, but I could not work with him because I am convinced he has determined to walk in a path of compromise and disobedience to the Bible.

• for the most part, contemporary Christianity cringes when confronted with the word separatist or separatism. Almost immediately a offensive stance is assumed and separatism is attacked as being legalistic, unloving, and a threat to Christian unity. The fact is, most people who throw around the term legalistic or legalism are using a popular, home grown definition that is not biblical. Some define legalism as the presence of rules or standards that a believer should obey. Charles Swindoll says legalism is, "an obsessive conformity to an artificial standard for the purpose of exalting oneself." Both types of definitions of legalism are erroneus! Biblically, the term legalism "describes human attempts to gain salvation and/or spiritual maturity through self-help and conformity to a list of religious laws. A person who sees legalism as a way of salvation and continuing acceptance by God is called a legalist." A good illustration of a legalist, biblically defined, can be found in Luke 18:10-14, the Parable of the Pharisee & the Publican.



• "The world is constantly trying to squeeze believers into its mold--to put the screws on believers, to pressure believers, to make the individual believer just another person of the world." If you are going to resist being conformed to the world and if you are going to be transformed by the renewing of your mind, there are things you will do and will not do! That is NOT legalism. (See Standards: Liberty or Legalism? by Dr. John Cawood in the appendix)



• According to the American Dictionary of the English Language published by Noah Webster in 1828 the general definition of separate is, "To disunite; to divide; to sever; to part; to disconnect; to withdraw from each other; being parted from each other." He goes on to define a separatist as "one that withdraws from a church, or rather from and established church, to which he has belonged; a dissenter…" (Noah Webster; American Dictionary of the English Language 1828 Edition reprint; p. 68).

While these definitions are certainly true as far as they go, they do not adequately define the Biblical Separatist or Biblical Separation.

1. A Biblical Separatist will not cooperate and withdraws from organizations, groups and individual unbelievers and their ungodly philosophies and practices
2. A Biblical Separatist will not cooperate and withdraws from churches, para-church organizations and individuals that are apostate and that propagate apostate teachings and practices
   
3. A Biblical Separatist will not cooperate and withdraws from churches, para-church organizations and individual believers that Aid and sanction apostates by their alignment & cooperation with them \\
4. A Biblical Separatist will not cooperate and withdraws from churches, para-church organizations and individuals that professe to be Christian but disobey & compromise clear Bible Teachings and will not repent.
   
   

A Biblical Separatist is a Christian who withdraws or will not cooperate with an established church (organization or individual) that

• 1) includes unbelievers and advocates godless philosophies and practices, and/or



• 2) is apostate and propagates apostate teachings and practices, or



• 3) those believers that aid and sanction apostates by their alignment and cooperation with them, and/or



• 4) individual believers that profess to be Christians but disobey and compromise clear Bible teachings and will not repent.

IF THIS IS THE CASE, THEN I COULD NOT FELLOWSHIP WITH ANY CHURCH.

Every church, local church, I would say has wheat and tares in their flocks.

DR. J.F. NORRIS SPOKE FOR MY DAD AT THE WARD STREET BAPTIST CHURCH IN ASHEBORO NORTH CAROLINE IN 1943 OR 1943

Fayetteville Street Baptist Church was founded in 1937 as an outgrowth of an evangelistic meeting held in Asheboro by Rev. George Cooper. A tabernacle was erected on Ward Street by a group of believers and an evangelistic club was organized with Colvin West as president to secure preachers to minister to the somewhat small congregation. In 1942, with a church membership of 106, Rev. Everette Whisnant was called as the first pastor and the church was given the name of Ward Street Baptist Church.

My Dad loved to start new churches, and he did start many churches in Virginia and North Caroline.

My Dad was really a church evangelist, he desired to see people saved, and then start a local church. Often Dad would go into an area where there were no Baptist Churches, and put up a tent, and begin preaching. When a group of people were saved, and others, a church was formed. Sometimes Dad would be the first Pastor, sometimes he would move on to the next city.

In the photo Dad is in the near center, coat open, my Mom, sad to say is hidding behind the mike to the right. I have no clue who the other people in the photo are, but I really would love to know.

Several times J.F. Spoke for my Dad. In 1952 I believe Dr. Norris came to Ninth Street Baptist Church in Roanoke Virginia to speak for Dad. This was one of the last churches I beleive Dr. Norris was in before he passed away. I was five years old. I remember only that Dr. Norris spent the night with us, and prayed for my brother and I before he left. Dr. Norris died August 1952. Age 75. My understanding is, Dr. Norris came to Roanoke Virginia and then went to a Youth Camp in Jacksonville, FLA, where he died. That is my understanding. My mother would know.

My mother is now 86 years old and has a excellent memory and she well remembers those days.

I went to Bible Baptist Seminary, in 1966, Arlington Texas. Dr. Norris started the school, which was named the Fundamental Baptist Bible Institute, in Ft. Worth started in 1939.

WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE IN GIVING BIBLICAL COUNSEL

So how are we to address our problems and issues and needs in life?
The term that is used is "Nouthetic confrontation." Let’s look at the meaning of the term.

All Christians should engage in it. "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and (for the moment we shall simply transliterate the next word) confronting one another nouthetically." Colossians 3:16.
.

Paul wrote in Romans 15:14: that all Christians must teach and confront one another in a Nouthetic fashion. "Concerning you, my brethren, I myself also am convinced that you are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able also to confront one another nouthetically."
.

Here is the point. Paul sees Christians meeting in nouthetic confrontation as normal every day activity. If they are filled with goodness and knowledge, they should be qualified and equipped to confront one another nouthetically. So in truth, you don’t need to be a preacher to counsel. The idea is that all Christians should be involved in this counsel.

I also realized that public preaching, confronting people with their problems is a part of the preacher’s activity, but it’s not all he is to be engaging in. Public ministry is important, but so also is private ministry to individuals. While you would like to go home on Sunday Morning and watch NASCAR, or play golf during the week, there needs to be time when you confront individuals one on one.

Note what Paul said about his ministry to the Ephesians: "Remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to confront each one nouthetically with tears."

It seemed that I was confronting individuals every day in the Word.

A part of ministry is daily, night and day, talking to people biblically about their life. Pastoral work is more than just getting ready for Sunday and Wednesday sermons. It’s that of course, but more it’s being involved in nouthetic activity. It’s the real work of pastoral work to engage in nouthetic activity.

When you read Paul’s letters, you notice that he mentions a number of individuals in whom he invested a number of hours of work with. Paul not only preached on Mars Hill, but he dealt with people as individuals, as groups, and as families, and he confronted them nouthetically.
