Biblical Separation

• The same is true for neo-fundamentalists such as Jerry Falwell and the Baptist Bible Fellowship today. When I hear Jerry Falwell standing up boldly for Christ on Larry King’s television program and in other public forums, I am thankful for him and love him in the Lord, but I could not work with him because I am convinced he has determined to walk in a path of compromise and disobedience to the Bible.

• for the most part, contemporary Christianity cringes when confronted with the word separatist or separatism. Almost immediately a offensive stance is assumed and separatism is attacked as being legalistic, unloving, and a threat to Christian unity. The fact is, most people who throw around the term legalistic or legalism are using a popular, home grown definition that is not biblical. Some define legalism as the presence of rules or standards that a believer should obey. Charles Swindoll says legalism is, "an obsessive conformity to an artificial standard for the purpose of exalting oneself." Both types of definitions of legalism are erroneus! Biblically, the term legalism "describes human attempts to gain salvation and/or spiritual maturity through self-help and conformity to a list of religious laws. A person who sees legalism as a way of salvation and continuing acceptance by God is called a legalist." A good illustration of a legalist, biblically defined, can be found in Luke 18:10-14, the Parable of the Pharisee & the Publican.



• "The world is constantly trying to squeeze believers into its mold--to put the screws on believers, to pressure believers, to make the individual believer just another person of the world." If you are going to resist being conformed to the world and if you are going to be transformed by the renewing of your mind, there are things you will do and will not do! That is NOT legalism. (See Standards: Liberty or Legalism? by Dr. John Cawood in the appendix)



• According to the American Dictionary of the English Language published by Noah Webster in 1828 the general definition of separate is, "To disunite; to divide; to sever; to part; to disconnect; to withdraw from each other; being parted from each other." He goes on to define a separatist as "one that withdraws from a church, or rather from and established church, to which he has belonged; a dissenter…" (Noah Webster; American Dictionary of the English Language 1828 Edition reprint; p. 68).

While these definitions are certainly true as far as they go, they do not adequately define the Biblical Separatist or Biblical Separation.

1. A Biblical Separatist will not cooperate and withdraws from organizations, groups and individual unbelievers and their ungodly philosophies and practices
2. A Biblical Separatist will not cooperate and withdraws from churches, para-church organizations and individuals that are apostate and that propagate apostate teachings and practices
   
3. A Biblical Separatist will not cooperate and withdraws from churches, para-church organizations and individual believers that Aid and sanction apostates by their alignment & cooperation with them \\
4. A Biblical Separatist will not cooperate and withdraws from churches, para-church organizations and individuals that professe to be Christian but disobey & compromise clear Bible Teachings and will not repent.
   
   

A Biblical Separatist is a Christian who withdraws or will not cooperate with an established church (organization or individual) that

• 1) includes unbelievers and advocates godless philosophies and practices, and/or



• 2) is apostate and propagates apostate teachings and practices, or



• 3) those believers that aid and sanction apostates by their alignment and cooperation with them, and/or



• 4) individual believers that profess to be Christians but disobey and compromise clear Bible teachings and will not repent.

IF THIS IS THE CASE, THEN I COULD NOT FELLOWSHIP WITH ANY CHURCH.

Every church, local church, I would say has wheat and tares in their flocks.

DR. J.F. NORRIS SPOKE FOR MY DAD AT THE WARD STREET BAPTIST CHURCH IN ASHEBORO NORTH CAROLINE IN 1943 OR 1943

Fayetteville Street Baptist Church was founded in 1937 as an outgrowth of an evangelistic meeting held in Asheboro by Rev. George Cooper. A tabernacle was erected on Ward Street by a group of believers and an evangelistic club was organized with Colvin West as president to secure preachers to minister to the somewhat small congregation. In 1942, with a church membership of 106, Rev. Everette Whisnant was called as the first pastor and the church was given the name of Ward Street Baptist Church.

THE OLD BARNS ARE SOMETIMES BEAUTIFUL

I have always liked to look at old barns, in my youth, I spend a lot of time while visiting my grandpa and grandma Greene in Bakersville NC. I would get out of the car, chase a few chickens that was wondering in the yard, and had to the barn that was just down the path from the house. That's was some very good memories for me.

I didn't write this next part, but its so true.

A stranger came by the other day with an offer that set me to thinking. He wanted to buy the old barn that sits out by the highway.

I told him right off he was crazy. He was a city type, you could tell by his clothes, his car, his hands, and the way he talked.

He said he was driving by and saw that beautiful barn sitting out in the tall grass and wanted to know if it was for sale.

I told him he had a funny idea of beauty. Sure, it was a handsome building in its day.

But then, there's been a lot of winters pass with their snow and ice and howling wind.

The summer sun's beat down on that old barn till all the paint's gone, and the wood has turned silver gray.

Now the old building leans a good deal, looking kind of tired. Yet, that fellow called it beautiful.

That set me to thinking.

I walked out to the field and just stood there, gazing at that old barn.

The stranger said he planned to use the lumber to line the walls of his den in a new country home he's building down the road.

He said you couldn't get paint that beautiful. Only years of standing in the weather, bearing the storms and scorching sun, only that can produce beautiful barn wood.

It came to me then. We're a lot like that, you and I. Only it's on the inside that the beauty grows with us.

Sure we turn silver gray too... and lean a bit more than we did when we were young and full of sap.

But the Good Lord knows what He's doing.
And as the years pass He's busy using the hard weather of our lives, the dry spells and the stormy seasons to do a job of beautifying our souls that nothing else can produce.
And to think how often folks holler because they want life easy! They took the old barn down today and hauled it away to beautify a rich man's house.

And I reckon someday you and I'll be hauled off to Heaven to take on whatever chores the Good Lord has for us on the Great Sky Ranch.

And I suspect we'll be more beautiful then for the seasons we've been through here... and just maybe even add a bit of beauty to our Father's house.

Pray there be peace within you today. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
And... I do sincerely Thank God for my wonderful friends and family who love me even though I show signs of weathering.

The Power of Words and the Wonder of God in the Word

SUNDAY AS A PASTOR/TEACHER I SPOKE TWICE

I wonder how many words I used in two messages. How many of those words came from the Bible, the Word of God? I wonder how many words I used this last Sunday when I spoke in both the morning and evening services. Words and the Word are the way God has for us to communicate idea and thoughts about Him.

My amazement at the significance of words. Think of it: (as John Piper puts this idea of words)

1. The Son of God is called the Word (John 1:1);
2. the universe was created with a word (Heb. 11:3);
3. all things are held in existence by the word (Heb. 1:3);
4. God reveals himself to us through the word (1 Sam. 3:21);
5. Jesus healed and cast out demons with a word (Matt. 8:16);
6. faith is sustained by words (Heb 3:13);
7. we fellowship with God by the words of prayer;
8. we worship him through the words of song and confession and preaching;
9. our relationships are all sustained and nurtured by words;
10. we speak our love to each other by words; kings rise and fall by their words;
11. politics, news, entertainment, business, education, international relations, families, friendships—all are possible because of words.
    

LANGUAGE IS GOD'S IDEA

1. Language is God’s idea. It belongs very close to who and what he is. It has huge potential for good, and catastrophic potential for evil. The tongue, James says, is seemingly untamable. “With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God” (James 3:9-10).

"Charles, are they listening to the words you are saying?" "They are hanging on every word spoken." The amazing power of language and words.

CHRIST FINDING HIS SHEEP THAT ARE LOST

Yes, we are to be a TEACHING CHURCH; yes, we are to be into DISCIPLING; and we are to be into REACHING THE LOST SHEEP OF CHRIST.

Luke 15: 1-10 and Matthew 18:10-14

HERE IS THE GOAL OF PRIORITIES THAT WE AS CHRISTIANS HAVE:

1. To REFLECT the grace of God back to Him in WORSHIP to His glory.
2. To APPLY the grace of God to each other for our EDIFICATION of faith and love to the glory of God
3. To ADVANCE the grace of God to those outside the faith in EVANGELISM for the in gathering of God's elect from every people, tribe, tongue, and nation to the glory of God.

SERMON NOTES FROM MY MESSAGE ON SUNDAY NIGHT JULY 13, 2008

We are to be a TEACHING CHURCH, yes we are to be into DISCIPLING, and also we are to be into REACHING THE LOST SHEEP OF CHRIST.

THE "EASY TO TALK TO" JESUS: Luke 15:1-8

Note who came to hear Jesus teach. Publicans and sinners. "Then drew near unto Jesus." The people of low morals in society. And notorious sinners. The despised, and religiously fallen.

Note: Jesus never drove away a sinner, or the ignorant, or refused a seeker because he was not yet admitted into the church. Note: Jesus was not teaching in a church of the day, either.

OUTLINE:

1. Some of God's Sheep are LOST.
2. God wants His LOST sheep found.
3. Someone must go after God's LOST sheep.

Our Lord Jesus Christ while He was here on earth was continually in the pursuit of lost souls. He was seeking lost men and women. It was for this reason that He came to earth and lived among mankind, even among those who were most evidently lost, that He might find them.

THE PARABLE OF THE LOST SHEEP IN LUKE 15 AND MATTHEW 18

1. Luke 15:1 "What! Jesus attracting and eating with the publicans and sinners?"
2. Luke 15:2 "Why didn't the Pharisees want to sit and eat with the sinners?"
3. Luke 15:3 "Why did Jesus give the Parable?"
4. Luke 15:4-7 "The Parable of the Lost Sheep."
   

An explanation of why Jesus gave these parables to the Pharisees and scribes is called an argumentrum ad hominen, an argument to the men themselves. It was a defense of why He drew and ate with publicans and sinners. His rebuttal had two objectives to the men and

IT WAS A PARTICULARLY STRONG ARGUMENT:

1. In the men's case it was only one sheep that they would go after.
2. In Jesus' case it was something infinitely more precious than all the sheep, for it was the soul of man which He sought to save.
3. There was a point He was seeking to address to the Pharisees and scribes
4. Also the point had an unusual power for driving it home to every person.

PARABLE: A Parable is a human story that gives a Spiritual Truth

This parable is an argument which would directly affect the men in their own daily lives.

• "If you men would each one of you go after a lost sheep and follow it in its track until you found it, how much more would I go after the lost souls, and follow them in all their wanderings until I can rescue them?"

The going after the sheep is a part of the parable which Jesus our Lord meant them to observe. It is about how Christ brings a lost soul from sin to grace.
