Preaching The Word of Sunday.

After my sermon on Sunday, I wanted to give a refund. Goodness what was I thinking.

The study of the Word of God is not for me a profession, it is very, very personal.

In fact, I will confess something I've probably never confessed, I think I am a far better
student of Scripture than I am a preacher of it. That is to say, I find the Scripture opens up to me in the discipline of my study in far more vast riches than I'm ever able to disseminate to you and always feel inadequate in doing so anyway. In one way, I guess, I always have a far better sermon in my study than you ever hear.

I always enjoy the study, preaching or teaching what I hope I have learned, is far more difficult for me.

THe Goal of Our Salvation Through Grace Romans Outline/Notes

THE GOAL OF OUR SALVATION THROUGH GRACE

ROMANS 6:11-14 Charles e Whisnant, Pastor/Teacher May 22, 2011 45.75

Romans 6: The Beginning of the Romans Road to Sanctification: 6:1 -8:39

KNOW THE FACTS: ROMANS 6:1-10

CONSIDER OR RECKON the FACTS as TRUE 6:11

YIELD or OFFER YOUR BODY to THESE TRUTHS: 6:12-14

The key to Christian living is knowing the facts, consider the facts as true and yield your life to these truths.

HERE IS THE BASIC PRINCIPLE IN THE WORD OF GOD: FIRST KNOW WHAT IS TRUE BEFORE YOU CAN OBEY GOD.

What I am about to teach you, and have been teaching you in chapter six you must know and fully believe what I am teaching you, (Paul is teaching us) are what I have said or about to say in verse 11 will make no sense at all.

The truth that Paul is laying out here in this chapter that you are spiritually dead to sin, and the reality that you are spiritually alive to Christ are not abstract concepts. for your finite minds to attempt to verify. They are divinely-revealed, foundational axioms behind Christians living, apart from which you can never hope to live the holy life your new LORD demands.

YOU NEED TO REALLY UNDERSTAND AND BELIEVE BY FAITH YOUR POSITION IN CHRIST SO THAT YOU CAN THEN LIVE AS YOU SHOULD.

Hosea 4:6 says this about the critical importance of KNOWING and DOING :

 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge. I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God. I also will forget your children.

"Likewise reckon (consider) 3049

 logizomai from logos = reason, word, account0 means to reckon, compute, calculate, to take into account, to deliberate, and to weigh.

ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord."—Romans 6:11.

But I must continue to remark upon the text itself, and shall ask,

IA What it is to be dead unto sin in the sense of the text.

IIA What it is to be alive unto God.

IIIA What it is to reckon ourselves to be dead unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

IVA What it is to be alive unto God through Jesus Christ.

VA What is implied in the exhortation of our text.

I. What it is to be dead unto sin in the sense of the text

• Being dead to sin must obviously be the opposite of being dead in sin. The latter must undeniably be a state of entire sinfulness—a state in which the soul is dead to all good through the power of sin over it.

• But right over against this, to be dead to sin, must be to be indifferent to its attractions—beyond the reach of its influence—as fully removed from its influences as the dead are from the objects of sense in this world.

• As he who is dead in the natural sense has nothing more to do with earthly things, so he who is dead to sin has nothing to do any more with sin's attractions or with sinning itself.

II. What is it to be alive unto God?

• To be full of life for Him—to be altogether active and on the alert to do His will; to make our whole lives a perpetual offering to Him, constantly delivering up ourselves to Him and His service that we may glorify His name and PROMOTE His interests.

III. What is it to reckon (consider) 3049 ourselves dead indeed unto Him?

• The word rendered reckon is sometimes rendered account. Abraham's faith was accounted unto him for righteousness.

• So, in this passage, reckon must mean believe, esteem yourselves dead indeed unto sin. Account this to be the case.

• Regard this as truly your relation to sin; you are entirely dead to it; it shall have no more dominion over you.

• A careful examination of the passages where this original word is used will show that this is its usual and natural sense.

• And this gives us the true idea of Gospel faith—embracing personally the salvation which is by faith in Jesus Christ.

• We are saved by faith along but not faith alone.

IV. What is meant by reckoning yourselves alive indeed unto God through Jesus Christ?

 Plainly this: that you are to expect to be saved by Jesus Christ and to calculate on this salvation as your own. You are to esteem yourself as wholly dead to sin and as consequently brought into life and peace in Christ Jesus.

V. What is implied in the exhortation of our text?

• That there is an adequate provision for this expectation, and for realizing these blessings in fact.

• For if there were no ground for understanding this, the command would be most absurd.

• A precept requiring us to account ourselves dead indeed unto sin and alive unto God, would be utterably untenable if there were no probability of the thing—

o If no provision were made for our coming into such relations to Sin on the one hand and to God through Christ on the other.

• For if these blessings could not be reasonably expected, there could be no rational ground for the expectation.

• If it were not realistic to expect it, then to command us to expect it would be deliberately unreasonable.

• Who does not see that the very command implies that there is a foundation laid and adequate provision made for the state required?

Worship Is The Best Life There Is

NOW I am at home, its 9:00 p.m. had a great day of fellowship with the people at Rivers of Joy.  Its good to teach  the Word and listen to the Word, and hear the singing  and talk to the folks.

So I am eating a bowl of ice cream. Now that is the life.

.HOW TO HELP PEOPLE THROUGH LIFE>?

I am grateful that ministry is ultimately not up to how I perform, but to Jesus’ power, call, wisdom, and love.  Only when I realize that my labors aren’t the answer can I labor as I ought.  Only when Jesus is more important to me than ministry can I do ministry as I ought – with the freedom and abandonment of the One who is my example as well as my Savior.

I learned from John MacArthur that my job as a pastor/teacher is to be faithful to the teaching of the Word of God, and then let God do the rest.
I want to help people out of their depression, and stress and hard times. But the only way I can do that is point them to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

And only as Christ is the ruler of their live can their live be what it ought to be.

CHARACTERISTICS OF AN UNCOMPROMISING LIFE Outline

CHARACTERISTICS OF AN UNCOMPROMISING LIFE

1A    AN UNEMBARRASSED  AUDACITY   Vs. 8

Daniel could have hem howl around the issue but he did not.  He told Ashpenaz the real reason why he could not eat of the kings meat! It would defile him.
We need the kind of people who are embarrassed of their commitment to the Word of God and the Lord of Bible. They are not  embarrassed to the Lordship of Christ.. Like Moses. Like David: Psalms 40:8-10.    Psalms 71:15, Romans 9:33; Mark 8:38, I Peter 4:16; 11 Timothy 1:7-8; Psalms 119:46.
Jeremiah 9:3; Ezekiel 3:9, ! Chronicle 12:8  Phiulippians 1:27
Isaiah: Isaiah 50:1. And Paul in 11 Timothy 1:7-8.
Nobody ought to intimate us out of our message.  A group of people who are not ashambed of Christ.

2A    AN  UNORDINARY  QUALITY OF EXCELLENCE  vs. 12

1C       The boys had a higher level of commitment. It was a matter of choice. But when it is establish you want to live on a higher view of life, and you set an unordinary quality of behavior. Have you notice those who have this quality  just don’t do it like everyone else does it.
2C       Aaron: Leviticus 10:8-10, Numbers 6:1-4;   Hannah in I Samuel 1:13-15 and Jeremiah in 35:5-8.

3A    UNEARTHLY  (NOT OF THIS WORLD) PROTECTION VS 9

1B       “Now God.” After Daniel purposed in his heart in vs. 9 God moved in vs. 9.
2B       Even if people do not like your conviction they admired him for it. When you meet someone with conviction you respect that someone
3B       The reason things went well with Daniel, was not him, but God. God protects those who have made an uncanny commitment to serve God at all cost.
4B       I Kings 8:50, Psalms 106:46. Proverbs 16:7

WHAT THERE WILL NOT BE IN HEAVEN

Question: What Will we do in Heaven?"

Charles e Whisnant May 15, 2011 Part Five

What will the redeemed do?
IB We will seat on the edge of a cloud, and play a harp.
2B Some will polish the stones of the foundation in the New Jerusalem
3B We want do anything at all. Just nothing, just forever rest, (sounds like hell to me)

WHAT WILL WE DO IN HEAVEN?

IB Will it be that we will have something to do? Something to plan for, some responsibility, some goal and objective, that will demand all of our powers, to put in motion, to effect, Those are the questions we will want to answer?

FIRST: IN UNDERSTANDING WHAT WE WILL DO, IS UNDERSTANDING WHAT WE WILL NOT DO IN HEAVEN.

IB We will not do wrong, that will imitate a lot of problems.
2B We will not sin, none of us will ever sin at any time.
3B We will never have to confess our sins. Nor struggle with sin, we will not have to apology to anyone for ever for any wrong doing.
4B We never feel quilt, or bad about anything.
5B We will never have to made anything right.
6B We never have to take time to explain what we really meant.
7B We never have to straighten out anything that is confused.
5B Never have to fix anything, or repair anything, or adjust anything.
6B Never need to replace anything, nothing will never ware out.
7B We will never have to help anything, for no one will need any help.
8B We never need to deal with Satan, or his demons, sinners, or defend ourselves against attack.
9B Never sad, or cry, never be alone, or lonely, never hurt emotionally, nor physically,
10B We never need to be cured, counsel, or coddled (Bear)nor entertain
11B We will never be less then total filled with absolute joy,
12B Never need to do anything special for anyone, because, everything we do will be special to everyone all the time.
13B Never grief, lose anything or anyone, or miss anyone, never have to be careful, because we couldn't make a mistake anyway.
14B Never have to plan for Plan B.
15B Never need to avoid danger, never will be an danger.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

In Christ and the Local Church Life Romans 6:8 Outline/Notes

WE SHALL LIVE "WITH HIM"
UNION WITH CHRIST
Does This Mean Personal and Mutually Together As One Body In Christ?
Romans 6:8            Charles e Whisnant     May 15, 2011       45.73
NOW IF
·       Since or in view of the fact that (we have died with Christ)

WE BE DEAD (599) WITH (4862) CHRIST
·       We have died, there has been a separation, departure from the former association of SIN
·       With Christ: speaks of an intimate, irreversible union with.

WE BELIEVE:4100

THAT WE SHALL ALSO LIVE (4800) SUZAO (SUZESOMEN)  WITH HIM

·       Live with (4800) (suzao from sun/syn= together or with + záo = live) means to live with. The preposition "sun" means with in the sense of "in union with" and thus is used to denote a more intimate relationship of Jesus Christ with us than the corresponding preposition "meta" which also means with. To illustrate, the criminals punished with Jesus were both crucified with (meta) Him or in His company. One of these thieves was not crucified together with (sún) Him, bound up and in union with Him, while the other thief was in fact crucified in union with Him. (Luke 23:43-44)

I want to go back and address this matter here in verse 8  “WITH CHRIST”.

UNION WITH CHRIST and THE CHURCH
·       We will live with Him. He is the essence of everything that we are. Think about that for a second. The Holy life of God has somehow been intertwined into my life. He lives in me! That’s the whole idea that Paul is trying to get across. When you start talking about turning away from sin and living holy, you've got to remember the holy, divine presence of God lives in you.
·       Zao is the essence of life so the verb combination suzao speaks of an intimate connection and conveys the picture that we have been entwined with the essence of Christ's (resurrected) life! We are identified with Him and because of His resurrection we share in and can experience the resurrection life of Jesus (walk in newness of life).
·       Christ lives in us in the Person of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ. His life is in us. We can now walk in a completely new way of life. We believe this and are persuaded by it to the point that we are enabled and willing to alter our lifestyle (empowered even in this act by His grace - He gives us the "want to").

The ways our individual “with Him” (union) with Christ influences how we view our corporate life together: The act of joining together Christ and the believer to form a whole.

Mystical union is the union of believers with Christ the head, and with one another; with Christ the head by faith, and with one another by love. … This union of believers in the same body is often compared with the mystery of the Trinity; and it is elsewhere expressed by one body.
1B    Union with Christ means addition of somebody into His Body (the Church)  1 Corinthians 10:17, 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, Colossians 3:3, 11-15
2B    Union with Christ is the foundation of our corporate solidarity and mutual ministry together. Romans 12:3-5
3B      Union with Christ and the Body of Christ in the local church is seen in the Lord’s Supper. Matthew 16:26-27 and John 6:41-56. I Corinthians 10:16-17
4B     Spiritual baptism is a symbol of our union with Christ and with all who are in Christ: Galatians 3:26-28 and I Corinthians 12:12-13
5B     Union with Christ is the context of our corporate maturity and growth. Ephesians 4:11-16, Colossians 3:12-17
6B       Union with Christ is the basis of our mutual dependence.  I Corinthians 12:12-31
7B       Union with Christ is the basis for sexual purity: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20
8B       Union with Christ is the basis for church membership:  I Corinthians 5:1-5

·       “Paul describes the church as the body of Christ because of its union with Christ.” It all makes sense. Our personal union with Christ is the basis for our life together.

The bottom line for me is this:

  1. In our union with Christ we discover the groundwork for our corporate (local church) life and solidarity.
  2.
  3. In union with Christ we find the source and purpose for our spiritual gifts.
  4. We become less inclined to favoritism and racial division,
  5.  Ultimately, the life and vitality of the church is directly connected to the life of the Savior.

The idea of Romans 6 also is to keep our focus on Christ Himself, on His person, rather than thinking about the benefits we receive from Christ.  We are to keep Christ central.  We are not to allow Him to fade into the background as a mere facilitator of these benefits.
